After numerous health issues over the last few weeks, the announcement was made today by the Vatican that Pope Francis died at age 88. He was both the first Jesuit and Latin American Pope in the history of the Catholic Church. His death marks the end of his 12 year papacy. The announcement was made on “X” just one day after he greeted people from his wheelchair in St Peter’s square

Chapter one

From Humble Beginnings to Great Heights

Pope Francis came from humble beginnings back in his home land of Argentina. He became pontiff at a turbulent time for the church as his predecessor Benedict made the decision to resign. He was the first Pope to do this in 6 centuries. Benedict was seen as a champion for staunch conservative Catholicism. In contrast to the more liberal Francis.  At that time during 2013 the Catholic church was reeling from numerous child abuse scandals.

Francis was often at odds with the Conservative Roman Catholic sect of the Vatican. He replenished the leadership of the church with those who shared his more liberal views. Making attempts to make the church more open to those it previously seemed to ostracise. While many approved and welcomed this new direction he received a lot of push back from the more traditionalists in the church. He often championed the poor and disadvantaged in society.

Before his health issue he was an avid traveller as he attempted to build secular bridges making journeys to Muslim nations where he spoke out against violence towards christians. He also made a visit to often religiously oppressive China. He was also vocal on international conflicts such as in South Sudan and Ukraine. However, problems with his knee, respiratory system and surgery on his intestines had slowed him down. After he almost passed away earlier last month the fact Pope Francis died is not shocking but it remains very sad for many catholics and secular admirers of the Pontiff.
