Elon Musk’s Artificial Intelligence start-up xAI raises $10 billion, half through debt and half through equity. This money was raised to grow its presence in the AI sector. Morgan Stanley, which led the funding transfer, confirmed the news in a statement.
According to the bank, xAI secured $5 billion through a combination of secured notes and team loans. The debt offering was over-subscribed, meaning more investors wanted to participate than there was space for. Morgan Stanley said investors included major global institutions showing strong interest despite earlier reports of mixed demand.
At the same time, xAI has also raised another $5 billion from a group of equity investors. These funds will help the company to expand its AI infrastructure, especially by creating new data centers and investing more in the main product called Grok, which is an AI chatbot developed to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Funds Will Support Data Centers and AI Expansion
The fresh capital will be used to strengthen xAI’s infrastructure, which is important for powering advanced AI models. AI companies require a lot of computing power and data storage, which means they also need more in large-scale data centres.
In addition to the $10 billion already raised, xAI is reportedly in ongoing talks to secure even more money than this. According to Bloomberg, the start-up is discussing another $20 billion in equity funding that could push its valuation past $120 billion. Some investors have suggested that the company could be worth as much as $200 billion, a figure that would place the company among the major AI companies in the world.
xAI Competes In a Crowded AI Sector
xAI is one of many companies in the fast-growing AI industry. With competition from major players like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic, the race to create faster, smarter, and more useful systems is very intense.
Elon Musk founded xAI in 2023, saying that the company would create AI aligned with "human truth" and avoid the risk that comes with unchecked AI development. The company’s Grok chatbot is already integrated with X, which Musk also owns. With billions of dollars in fresh funding, xAI now has the power to skill up and compete more aggressively with not just its rivals, but also the new start-ups.
