Building a successful business often comes with immense challenges and sacrifices. This was precisely the case for Jen Aphay, a 31-year-old entrepreneur who completely overhauled her life to launch her own brand, Gymnos – a sweat-proof makeup line designed for active women.
Jen’s inspiring story is a powerful example of resilience, risk-taking, and determination. From selling her home to working tirelessly across two jobs, Jen went all-in to bring her vision to life. Here’s how she made it happen.
From a Six-Figure Job to a Start-Up Dream
Jen Aphay was living comfortably as a paralegal, earning £110,000 annually, when she conceived the idea for Gymnos six years ago. At the time, the concept of sweat-proof makeup came to her as a simple solution for women looking to feel confident and beautiful during workouts or while on the go.
However, it wasn’t instant execution. Despite strongly believing in her idea, it took Jen four solid years of planning, hustling, and saving to turn her dream into reality.
“I was definitely anxious at the start,” Jen admitted. “I had no prior experience in product formulation or running a business. I wasn’t entirely sure where to begin.”
But a clear vision and unwavering determination kept her going.
Hustling Harder Than Ever
To fund her dream, Jen worked two jobs—her regular 9–5 as a paralegal and an additional weekend role. She saved rigorously and changed her lifestyle, sacrificing luxuries and adopting a hyper-focused approach.
Jen invested £80,000 of her savings into her brand—a hefty sum that covered expenses like samples, consultation fees, and preparation for the product launch.
This financial commitment was nerve-wracking. “It was a terrifying decision,” Jen said, reflecting on the leap she took. But her belief in the product’s mission – empowering women to feel confident in their own skin – gave her the courage she needed.
The Sacrifices That Made It All Possible
Launching a business often requires letting go of comforts, and Jen’s story is no exception. She gave up evenings out, sold her beloved designer handbags, and even limited her social life.
“I made several sacrifices to focus on building the business,” Jen explained. “I essentially isolated myself in my apartment, dedicating every spare moment to working on Gymnos. Some days I only managed four hours of sleep.”
Jen’s efforts also impacted her personal relationships. Prioritising her business meant stepping back from friendships and social engagements. “I even asked loved ones to visit me so I wouldn’t lose any time that could be spent working,” Jen said. “Unfortunately, this meant I lost a few friendships along the way.”
The Biggest Gamble – Selling Her Home
Despite her substantial savings, Jen faced increasing financial pressure as product costs soared. To keep her vision alive, she made the ultimate sacrifice—selling her house.
“One of the toughest decisions I had to make was selling my house,” she revealed. “The proceeds went straight back into the business to ensure we could launch on time despite growing financial hurdles.”
This decision came with significant risk. Jen was trading her financial stability for an opportunity that wasn’t guaranteed to succeed. “The biggest risk I’ve taken was leaving behind a stable six-figure salary and the security of homeownership,” she said.
A Thriving Vision Realised
Fast forward to March 2024, Gymnos officially launched and marked the culmination of years of effort, sacrifice, and faith. The brand quickly gained traction, boasting £10,000 in monthly revenue just months after launching. Gymnos is now stocked in over 50 Anytime Fitness gyms across New South Wales and has expanded to seven Snap Fitness franchises.
Jen described the exhilaration that came with seeing her vision realised. “The most exciting moment for me has been seeing the smiles on women’s faces,” she said. “To hear that we’ve helped them feel beautiful and confident, without worrying about sweat or smudging, is incredibly fulfilling.”
