Sam Altman backed, Fusion startup Helion, announced a $465 million Series G funding round to value the company at $15.5 billion. This latest investment comes as Helion gears up for construction of Orion, the company's first fusion power plant.

The company had raised $425 million in January 2025, and the overall funding stands at $1.5 billion. New investors participating in the latest round included Thrive Capital, Alta Park Capital, Lux Capital, Anti Fund,  and Peak XV partners while existing funds like Lightspeed Ventures, Softbank Vision Fund 2 to also participated.

It uses magnets to compress fusion fuel and extract energy from the plasma as it expanses.

And Helion believes this could really make efficiency better. Fusion specialists, however, remain sceptical because the company publishes no peer-reviewed research on a regular basis. From the outset, CEO David Kirtley has said the company would rather be "building and testing" than theorising.

This new investment round comes as fusion energy has gained more attention from both investors. In the last month alone, at least four fusion startups, Focused Energy, Thea Energy, Inertia Energy and Type One Energy announced significant funding deals.

The prospect for fusion is to deliver large amounts of continuous carbon-neutral electricity from day-to-day energy-dense fuels such as seawater, and in very small volumes per unit time. Further boosted by artificial intelligence, which requires ever-increasing amounts of electricity to power data centres and high-performance computing systems.
