"Catastrophic" Fires Hit Australia: Three Missing, Homes Destroyed

Breaking News: Australia’s struggle with intense Australian bushfires is making headlines with a historic heatwave hitting the country. The situation is particularly bad in Victoria, where several homes have already been burnt out and three people are missing. The Australian fire emergency has escalated to catastrophic, the highest possible warning level as exhausted firefighters battle 45°C temperatures and high winds.

And now, bushfires in Victoria are out of control in parts of the state. To the north, the Longwood fire has already razed more than 36,000 hectares. Firefighters are also keeping watch on Perth bushfires, Western Australia with emergency evacuations issued for homes under threat by flames in Kenwick a short time ago. These current fire incidents are straining emergency resources everywhere in the country.

Homes Lost in Ruffy Township

The small town of Ruffy’s has been decimated by the Longwood bushfire. The scene was described by a local fire captain, George Noye, as “like a bomb went off.” He confirmed that the town’s school and at least 20 homes have been destroyed. Many families have lost everything, what little clothes they were wearing.

Villagers have been left with nothing, from shearing sheds to livestock. One local firefighter losing the fight on the flames outside his neighbours’ houses, only to return and find out his own home is gone. Though the physical loss is enormous, the community is now thankful that there are no confirmed deaths, despite a continuing search for missing people.

3 Missing as Blazes Roar Across Area

Police seek two adults and a child who were last seen at their residence near Longwood. The officer had gone to the home to urge family members to take shelter because it already was too late for them to leave safely. When firefighters returned, they found the house was completely gone. These current fire incidets underscore how highly risky it is to stay in place when directed, “leave now.”

Authorities are hoping that the family found a safe place to hide, but they’re taking the situation very seriously. The Longwood fire is considered “dynamic,” which means it’s headed in multiple directions and only expected to grow even more before weather moves are made. Neighbouring community members need to remain vigilant for new Australian bushfires which may ignite from embers or lightning.

A Record-Breaking Heatwave Across Australia

This is not a strictly Victorian problem; in total about 40 percent of southeastern Australia is in the midst of an extreme heatwave. In South Australia the mercury hit 46°C, while Sydney is preparing for a high of 42°C on Saturday. Even areas of the Perth bushfire zones have been hit with blistering temperatures, posing further challenges for fire crews in WA to contain flames.

“Please stay out of the heat, indoors if possible,” emergency services said in a note posted online in three languages.“Drink lots of water!Check on your neighbors. While a cool change is forecast to provide some relief in Melbourne on Friday evening, the strong winds that accompany it could make Australian bushfire conditions even more unpredictable. More to come when Sammy serves up the next breaking headline.
