Meta turns to rapid-build facilities to expand AI infrastructure
Synopsis
Meta is expanding its AI infrastructure in Ohio through rapid-deployment data center facilities aimed at increasing computing capacity. The project is part of the company's broader investment in artificial intelligence, as technology firms worldwide increase spending on data centers, power resources and digital infrastructure to support growing AI demand.
Meta is accelerating its buildout of AI infrastructure by installing vast tent-like structures on its data center campus in New Albany, Ohio, a strategy it is pursuing since its ability to bring additional compute capacity online quickly is important because demand for AI capacity has spiked across the tech sector.
The buildings, called rapid deployment facilities by permitted construction plans, are about 125,000 square feet each and are set up next to the overall development of Meta's data center project in Ohio. This represents the escalating urgency among big tech companies for computing power that they will need to train and power increasingly advanced AI systems.
The Ohio project is one component of Meta’s efforts to establish some of the largest AI computing campuses in the country. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg has spoken previously about plans for huge complexes that include the Prometheus campus in Ohio and the Hyperion project in Louisiana that will both support high-end AI workloads.
The New Albany project reportedly has about 200 megawatts of modular gas turbine power generation available, underscoring how power-hungry AI work can be.
This expansion occurs as overall data center investment is quickening around the world. The IEA anticipates that electricity demand from data centers will soar in the years to come largely fueled by AI applications.
While the U.S. Remains the world's biggest data center market, a wide number of other countries like Australia, Canada, the UK, India, Germany and Singapore are all increasing investment in their digital infrastructure and power capabilities to accommodate AI growth.
This trend means that data center availability and power can be incredibly important for Australian businesses with the development of the big tech AI footprint growing worldwide. There has been much interest from these companies looking at opportunities in Australia because of their clean energy resources, reliable regulation, and the burgeoning market for cloud computing.
Meta is in the process of raising its AI spending plans, and it now forecasts as much as $145 billion to be spent on data center, server, and network infrastructure over the next few years.
During the first quarter of 2026 Meta had revenue of about $42.3 billion and net income of around $16.6 billion, so it has financial backing for the build out of its infrastructure and computing power.
