At least 1,000 individuals lost their lives when a massive landslide struck the Marra Mountains in western Sudan. The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A) reported the slide occurred following days of heavy rain on Sunday. Nearly the entire Tarasin village was buried. Only a single individual has been rescued alive, the group stated.
The United Nations and other relief organizations have been requested by the rebels to provide assistance immediately. Other individuals had fled to the Marra Mountains initially to flee fighting between Sudan’s military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Now, the same families are hit by this recent tragedy.
More individuals are already fleeing war
The governor of Darfur Minni Minnawi referred to the landslide as a “humanitarian tragedy.” He stated the survivors require food, shelter and medicines immediately. Sudan is already in big trouble following the outbreak of war in April 2023. Millions of individuals have been displaced from their homes and many of them are struggling with hunger.
Last year’s reports estimated that as many as 150,000 individuals might have died in the conflict. Entire towns were evacuated, and families continue to cross borders in search of refuge. The landslide only worsened the situation for individuals who had lost so much already.
Dread of further suffering to come
The SLM/A, who dominate the region in which the landslide occurred, declared that they will keep on battling with the army against the RSF. Residents of Darfur think that the RSF and allied forces are attempting to convert the region’s mixed population into an Arabs-only regime.
With roads blocked and villages buried under mud, aid may not arrive quickly. Aid workers threaten that additional rain would cause new landslides. For the time being, families use hand tools to dig up loved ones under debris.
