Synopsis

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has admitted the company made mistakes during its AI-driven workforce restructuring, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters. The comments come after Meta laid off 10% of its workforce and reassigned around 7,000 employees to AI-related roles. Zuckerberg said the company is working to provide stability, create new opportunities for affected staff and improve collaboration through increased investment in team-building initiatives. He also said Meta does not currently expect any further company-wide layoffs this year as it continues investing heavily in artificial intelligence.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has admitted that the company made mistakes throughout its ongoing AI-led transformation of its workforce. The comments come as Meta Platforms continues to pour billions into artificial intelligence and rework its workforce towards AI initiatives.

Zuckerberg Acknowledges Challenges

Zuckerberg said the fast pace of AI evolution presented serious challenges to the company, in a note. The changes were complex, and mistakes had already been made, and could still occur as Meta carries on with its overhaul, he told employees.

At some level, he added, the only thing that can effectively control things in non-Meta matters such as broader changes in the tech industry is to provide stability and guidance within those parameters.

Major AI Restructuring at Meta

The remarks follow Meta's announcement in May that it had implemented a significant restructuring. It cut 10% of its global workforce and redirected some 7,000 employees to efforts tied to AI workflows and model training.

Meta plans to use this flexibility to find new roles for employees who have been shifted into AI-related positions and could transfer employees back out of AI careers if changes are needed, Zuckerberg said. Meta, for its part, also reiterated that it doesn't expect more company-wide layoffs this year.

Company Plans More Employee Investment

Part of the initiative to solve these issues, according to Meta, is a return to team-building spending. Zuckerberg said that budgets for offsite meetings and company events will be expanded, adding that a massive hackathon in July would be focused on collaborative projects and building AI models. The efforts are to increase linkages across teams as Meta fast-forwards its AI agenda.

Changes to Management Structure

The memo also discussed the resulting pressures on management workloads post-restructure. Meta's Applied AI Engineering unit adopted a flat org structure with some managers overseeing as many as 50 employees. Zuckerberg said the company has heard complaints over broader management duties and that it would dial back on doing so.

Meta has significantly ramped up its investment in artificial intelligence over the last few months. As it moves forward with its AI ambitions, the company increased its forecast for annual capital expenditure in April to $125 billion-$145 billion.
