Nevada Approves Up to 8,000 Robotaxis as Tesla, Uber and Waymo Expand Autonomous Services

Tesla, Uber and Waymo have secured approval to operate thousands of robotaxis in Nevada, setting the stage for one of the largest commercial autonomous vehicle deployments in the U.S.
Nevada has cleared the way for a major expansion of autonomous ride-hailing after the Nevada Transportation Authority (NTA) unanimously approved commercial robotaxi permits for Tesla, Uber and Waymo.
The approvals allow the companies to deploy up to 8,000 robotaxis across Clark County, including Las Vegas, over the next 12 months.
Tesla received the largest allocation with permission to operate up to 5,000 robotaxis. Waymo was approved for 1,000 autonomous vehicles while Uber secured approval for 1,000 robotaxis through partnerships with Motional and Zoox.
Zoox also retains a separate permit allowing it to operate 100 robotaxis independently.
Despite the approvals, company executives acknowledged that reaching those limits within a year is unlikely.
Tesla Expects a Slower Rollout
Tesla's Cybercab chief engineer, Eric Early, described the 5,000-vehicle cap as a maximum rather than a deployment target. He said the company would consider it a success if it could place around 2,500 robotaxis on Nevada roads over the next year.
Even so, Las Vegas is emerging as one of the most competitive robotaxi markets in the U.S. If Tesla, Uber and Waymo execute even a portion of their plans, the city could become a key testing ground for large-scale autonomous transportation.
The expansion also highlights the industry's shift from pilot programs to commercial operations, with companies racing to establish an early lead in the growing robotaxi market.
Industry Growth Sparks Workforce Concerns
The approvals were opposed by representatives of local taxi operators and the Livery Operators Association who argued that a rapid influx of autonomous vehicles could oversaturate the transport market and increase congestion, particularly around Las Vegas' busy Golden Triangle.
Supporters, however, argue that robotaxis will create new jobs related to vehicle maintenance, charging and fleet operations, while improving transportation efficiency.
Uber continues to advocate a hybrid model where robotaxis operate alongside human drivers instead of replacing them entirely. The company says such an approach would help cities gradually integrate autonomous vehicles while maintaining enough capacity to meet demand during peak travel periods.
The latest approvals mark another milestone in the commercial rollout of autonomous mobility with Nevada positioning itself as one of the leading U.S. markets for robotaxi deployment.
