Zoox Gets Landmark U.S. Robotaxi Approval

The Amazon-owned company became the first to secure approval for paid driverless robotaxi services without manual controls.
Zoox, which is owned by Amazon, has become the first to get landmark federal approval to operate a paid robotaxi service with a vehicle that has no steering wheel, accelerator pedal or even an emergency brake.
It was given permission from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to provide paid commercial service for two years with its self-made autonomous cars.
The allowance enables Zoox to have up to 2,500 compliant cars per year that do not use traditional controls. It will be a paid passenger ride service for customers in Las Vegas, once the company gets local and state approval.
The approved vehicles use no more than a couple of hours of data for each ride from more than 500,000 rides and more than 3 million miles in testing to give an equivalent comparison as that used in a regular vehicle.
Federal Exemption Sets New Benchmark
The Zoox electric taxi was designed specifically to be driven autonomously, rather than being modified. The car can be driven in two directions, turns using four-wheel steering, carries passengers, and there are no controls for a driver.
The company’s technology gives Zoox freedom from what many of its opponents feared - taking more years than a government can wait until guidelines are introduced regarding completely automatic cars.
The ruling permits a significant amount of leeway in regulations by granting permission for vehicles which are safer than cars the government allows for usage already. During the permission period, Zoox will provide reports relating to crash and performance incidents, which provides regulators the ability to intervene if necessary. The car has also experienced recalls on over 100 autonomous vehicles to improve its software.
According to the autonomous industry body Autonomous Vehicles 50, companies which operate similar vehicles like Waymo are yet to obtain federal approval and use cars that incorporate traditional controls.
