UBS Wins Final Approval for US Bank Licence

Synopsis

It concluded an extended process that had begun with UBS’s 2008 purchase of failed Swiss bank PaineWebber, which needed a national banking license to engage in certain activities. The Swiss bank can now transform UBS Bank USA into a fully licensed national bank, bringing checking accounts, savings accounts and mortgages along with more extensive payment services. The move is key to CEO Sergio Ermotti’s efforts to expand UBS’s U.S. wealth management business and go head-to-head with American competitors. For current clients, nothing will change in the immediate term. UBS filed its application in October and received conditional approval in January 2026

UBS has obtained full regulatory approval for a national banking license in the United States, enabling it to provide checking accounts and savings accounts, as well as mortgages as it pushes to build wealth management nationwide.

UBS Gets a Complete US Bank License

UBS has received a national banking licence (a kind of general commercial bank licence) in the US. The Swiss bank said on Friday that its application to turn UBS Bank USA, an existing subsidiary, into a nationally chartered bank had been approved by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.

The approval is the last stage in a process UBS began in October last year, when it filed its application for the first time. It gained conditional approval in January and has now passed the final obstacle. Its President, Rob Karofsky, described it as a significant milestone that reinforces the bank’s sustained commitment in the US and reflects the investments being made to further enhance its global wealth manager position.

What the Licence Actually Allows

UBS Bank USA has been operating under a state charter until now, meaning its product offerings were more limited than those of fully licensed US banks. The national charter will enable UBS to provide the full suite of services permitted with US lenders, checking accounts, savings accounts and mortgages included.

It will also be able to extend payment services more broadly to its wealth management clients across the country. The bank was adamant that nothing would change for existing clients in the immediate future. They will continue to use the same account and cash management services through their financial advisers as before.

Why This Is Important for UBS’s Ambitions in the U.S

UBS has long been keen to grow its share of the US, the world’s biggest wealth management market. The charter is among CEO Sergio Ermotti’s and UBS Americas President Rob Karofsky’s latest moves to boost the division’s profitability.

The national bank charter lets UBS expand its wealth management client base beyond the ultra-rich clients it has traditionally served to capture entrepreneurs and other wealthy individuals in the U.S. who historically haven’t gotten world-class service from UBS’s smaller, more limited American platform. The 2023 Credit Suisse acquisition also provided an infusion of firepower for UBS’s US investment banking operations, which it intends to deploy in bringing new private banking clients into the fold.

Stricter Rules at Home Are Sending UBS Looking Abroad

A part of what is driving UBS’s US push is pressure back home in Switzerland. Subsequent to the Credit Suisse debacle, the Swiss government has taken steps to restrict banking activities further, including proposals for more stringent capital controls.

The US licence is a boost for UBS as it confronts stricter banking regulations in Switzerland, providing it with a stronger footing in a jurisdiction where rules are substantially friendlier to expanding a wealth management business. For UBS, gaining a fully licensed US bank enables it to compete on equal terms with American rivals such as Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan in one of the most profitable markets globally.
