Synopsis

A two-person Sydney startup has won a Red Dot Award: Product Design 2026 for Looplock, its patented reusable bag seal, earning international recognition alongside some of the world's biggest consumer brands.

Sydney industrial design start-up, Bound, has nabbed a Red Dot Award: Product Design 2026 for the development of its reusable bag sealing system, LoopLock. The product aims to replace single-use plastic bag clips and twist ties that are frequently used in household and food packaging.

The Bound Red Dot Award celebrates the start-up’s first commercially available product, which stays affixed to a bag after it is opened so that it can be used again without a separate sealing mechanism.

The Sydney-based company is now recognised amongst this year’s list of global winners after their entry was judged by a panel of independent experts on thousands of product entries worldwide.

International Recognition for Local Design

Bound was created by a two-person team, the Sydney-based start-up the LoopLock after identifying a common packaging issue. The reusable solution has been granted both design and system patents.

With a rich history spanning back decades, the Red Dot Award is one of the globe’s most well-regarded design competitions for products, receiving countless entries from European, Asian, North American, and Oceanian companies each year. Products are analysed and rated by the judging panel based on factors such as usability, functionality, quality, and design.

The recognition will help an emerging Australian business to achieve greater international exposure with LoopLock lining up with some of the major, globally-recognised companies in both the industrial design and consumer products industries.

Packaging Industry Continues to Shift

Packaging and food manufacturers have increasingly been putting sustainability and circularity at the fore, especially given increased attention on packaging waste and the rise of reusability.

For example, 72 per cent of plastic packaging put to use by companies that have signed on to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Global Commitment 2025 plan are either reusable, recyclable or compostable.

Yet only 1.2 per cent of plastic packaging used by these companies are reusable packaging systems, highlighting the continued potential in the market.

In its Global Plastics Outlook, the OECD estimates that without action, the world will nearly triple plastic use by 2060.

Bound is not yet ready to reveal revenue, profit or investment figures as it remains privately owned. Founder Andrew Davey says the development process behind the company’s first commercial product has been focused on providing the reusable option that stays attached throughout the usage process.

The Bound Red Dot Award for its design provides the young Australian industrial designer firm with significant international acknowledgement as the market looks to a circular, more reusable, future for packaging.
