ANZ Startups Raise A$67.2M as AI and Fintech Deals Lead Funding Week
Synopsis
ANZ startups raised A$67.2 million this week, led by Sydney-based Gridsight, Pearler and Apate.AI, as investors backed AI-powered energy management, fintech, cybersecurity and other technology businesses targeting major market opportunities.
Australian and New Zealand startups secured A$67.2 million in funding this week, with Sydney-based companies accounting for the bulk of the capital as investors backed technologies spanning energy infrastructure, fintech and cybersecurity.
Three Sydney startups led the funding activity. Gridsight secured the largest round at A$36 million, followed by investing platform Pearler with A$16 million and anti-scam technology company Apate.AI with A$11.4 million.
The deals highlight continued investor interest in startups applying technology to major infrastructure and financial challenges.
Gridsight Leads the Funding Rush
Gridsight raised US$26 million (A$36 million) in a Series B led by Insight Partners, alongside Galvanize and existing investors Airtree, Energy Transition Ventures and Aera VC.
Founded in Sydney in 2020, Gridsight uses AI to help electricity networks manage capacity as renewable energy and distributed solar place increasing demands on existing infrastructure. The company operates across Australia, New Zealand, the US and UK.
Its platform helped Endeavour Energy double household solar export capacity from 5kW to 10kW. The programme is expected to unlock more than A$100 million in customer value and 600MW of additional solar capacity.
The new capital will support further US expansion and growth in Australia, including as AI data centres increase pressure on electricity networks.
Fintech and Anti-Scam Startups Attract Capital
Pearler raised A$16 million in Series A funding led by Canada’s Portage Ventures, with Altered Capital and No Brand also participating. Founded in 2018, the investing platform says it now has close to 200,000 users and A$3.5 billion in client assets.
The company plans to use the funding to launch additional financial products over the next 18 months.
Meanwhile, Apate.AI raised US$8.15 million (A$11.4 million) in seed funding led by Silicon Valley’s Lobby Capital. The Sydney-born startup develops conversational AI agents that engage with scammers and extract intelligence from fraud networks.
Apate will use the funding for international expansion and platform development, including a planned London office. Co-founder Peter Eckermann will relocate to the US to lead its North American expansion, while its technology and research teams remain in Sydney.
Other deals included Auckland-based Drumbeat, which raised A$1.64 million, taking this week’s funding activity across the region to A$67.2 million.
