It was the first time that SK Hynix had moved ahead its larger competitor in terms of annual profit. The earnings came out this week, with SK Hynix reporting on Wednesday and Samsung on Thursday morning local time. The consecutive outcomes underscored the contrast and a turnabout in South Korea’s tech sector.
SK Hynix has expanded steadily after it was purchased by SK Telecom in 2012, for roughly $3 billion. The company, while doing well, has remained narrowly focused on memory chips whereas the Samsung conglomerate is a much larger enterprise that includes smartphones, TVs and home appliances alongside contract chip manufacturing.
Its memory business is still sizable, expected to generate roughly 24.9 trillion won in operating profit in 2025. But its advances were outstripped by the pace of SK Hynix’s ascent.
The AI Boom Pushes The Chip Race
This shift in profit matters because it underscores how artificial intelligence is changing the chip business. The high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, is now an integral part of AI processors and large data centres.
SK Hynix is the world’s leading maker of memory, which is heavily used in AI systems produced by companies including Nvidia. As AI server demand soared heading into 2025, orders for HBM rose significantly, providing SK Hynix a huge head start.
Analysts say SK Hynix was aided by solid product quality and consistent supply just when spending on AI infrastructure was taking off. This enabled the company to book long-term customer contracts early. Samsung climbed back to the memory revenue throne in Q4 2025. But boosted sales did not mean a better annual profit, which highlighted the roles of margins and advanced memory.

Analysts Say SK Hynix Is a Clear AI Winner In Asia
“SK Hynix is definitely a great winner of AI in Asia,” said MS Hwang, research director at the research firm Counterpoint Research. He said the company’s HBM advantage in quality and supply has been key during the current AI investment cycle.
SK Hynix has kept its place in the market despite Samsung making gains in overall memory revenue ranking toward the end of last year, according to Hwang. Ray Wang, an analyst at SemiAnalysis, said competition was increasing but concentrated at the top. “The race for HBM4 is very much between SK Hynix and Samsung,” he said, noting both firms are currently stronger than Micron.
How The Markets Are Impacting The Rivalry
HBM is a specialised form of memory that stacks chips to deliver faster speeds and better energy efficiency. It is critical for AI workloads that require rapid access to massive volumes of data.
Counterpoint estimated in December that SK Hynix held a 57 per cent share of HBM revenue in the third quarter of last year, while Samsung accounted for 22 per cent. SK Hynix also moved ahead of Samsung in the broader DRAM market, strengthening its overall competitive position across data centres, servers, and PCs.
HBM4 Introduction To Accelerate Competition In 2026
Competition is expected to intensify as Samsung begins delivering HBM4, the sixth generation of high-bandwidth memory, later this year. Analysts believe Samsung can recover from quality issues seen in earlier HBM products.
Even so, SK Hynix is expected to keep a dominant share of the HBM4 market. Local media reports the company has secured more than two-thirds of HBM supply orders for Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin products. As AI investment extends into 2026, the rivalry between SK Hynix and Samsung is set to remain one of the most closely watched battles in the global semiconductor industry.
