OpenAI Supports Australian Founders with A$5.5M in Startup Credits

OpenAI is expanding its support for Australia’s startup ecosystem, providing millions in AI credits as local founders turn ideas into businesses.
OpenAI has provided more than A$5.5 million in API credits to Australian founders and entrepreneurs as local startups increasingly use artificial intelligence to build products and compete in global markets.
The milestone was highlighted at OpenAI’s Sydney Founder Day which brought together more than 150 founders, entrepreneurs and builders.
The event showcased businesses using AI across areas including fintech, legal services, customer support and automation.
Australia is already among OpenAI’s top 10 markets globally for developers building on its platform.
Earlier this year, the company expanded its startup program in Australia, offering eligible businesses up to US$50,000, or about A$70,000, in API credits, along with 10 complimentary ChatGPT Business seats and access to Codex.
From School Projects to Funded Startups
The event also highlighted how AI is lowering the barrier to starting a technology business.
Among the attendees were Sydney Year 12 students Peter Starodubtsev and Steve Zhu who are building AI-native startups before graduating.
Starodubtsev founded Petrex which is a gaming and advertising venture that uses OpenAI’s Codex to create branded experiences inside gaming platforms. The startup has already secured six-figure pre-seed funding and worked with brands including Samsung and NBC Universal Studios.
Zhu is building Workwise, an AI-powered operations platform designed to help small businesses manage workflows across their existing software.
Their examples point to a wider shift in Australia's startup ecosystem. Founders can now test, build and improve software with considerably smaller teams than traditional technology businesses often required.
OpenAI Sees Opportunity in Australia's Startup Ecosystem
Wulfie Bain, OpenAI’s International Applied AI Lead, said Australian founders have long had global ambitions but AI is helping them turn ideas into products faster.
The company is also positioning lower AI costs as an important advantage for startups.
OpenAI said recent efficiency improvements have reduced API pricing for its GPT-5.6 Luna model by 80% which is allowing developers to handle larger workloads at a lower cost.
For early-stage companies, access to computing and AI tools can make a meaningful difference. Instead of spending heavily on infrastructure before finding product-market fit, founders can use existing AI models to build and test ideas quickly.
OpenAI’s growing support for Australian startups also reflects the country's increasing role in the global AI economy. The next challenge for these young businesses will be turning that access into sustainable products, customers and international growth.
