OpenAI is using its AI models in chip development as semiconductor demand rises. Its Jalapeño processor reached tape-out within nine months, with deployment planned alongside external accelerators.

OpenAI chip design is taking further steps into the company's AI strategy, with CFO Sarah Friar saying it used its own AI models while developing its first custom inference processor.

After just 9 months, Friar said OpenAI's Jalapeño chip was 'taped out.' The design is now complete and has been sent to tape out to manufacturing in chip development.

Jalapeño Moves From Design to Deployment 

OpenAI's chip design efforts are focused around inference, the point at which an AI model is generating a response.

According to a performance comparison in August, Jalapeño was generating between 1.5 and 1.9 times the maximum token throughput per watt of the commercial systems OpenAI tested. In those tests, it reported 1.7- to 3.6-times lower end-to-end latency.

The tests run on GPT-OSS 120B, DeepSeek R1 and Kimi K2. By the end of 2026, OpenAI hopes to release Jalapeño with acceleration tools from Nvidia and AMD and other vendors.

The development is a trend as companies are creating processors for their AI workloads. Last week, Broadcom reported a record $16.7 billion in revenues from its AI semiconductors business in its most recent quarter and predicted $115 billion in fiscal 2027 revenue.

AI Demand Pushes Semiconductor Market Higher 

OpenAI's chip design initiative is a part of a rapid proliferation of the semiconductor industry.

The global semiconductor market is estimated to reach $1.51 trillion in 2026, representing a 90% increase, according to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics Spring 2026 Semiconductor Market Forecast. Memory is projected to grow above $800 billion and logic chips are predicted at 37% growth.

The region has a very different outlook. The projections for the Americas have an increase of 112%, Asia-Pacific at 87% and European at 58% and Japanese 28% growth of the 2026. WSTS estimates that the global market will be valued at approximately $1.9 trillion by 2027.

According to the August Forecast Analysis: Semiconductors, Gartner is forecasting semiconductor revenue to rise by 92% to $1.555 trillion in 2026, compared to $809 billion in 2025. It expects the AI data-centre ecosystem to grow to become 36.5% of semiconductor revenue this year.

OpenAI’s Enterprise Business Expands 

At the same time, OpenAI's chip design project is progressing in parallel as the company accelerates its enterprise business.

When compared to OpenAI's overall annualised revenue growth over the same period (June to July), Friar's enterprise revenue grew by 32%, compared with 20%. By mid-2026, enterprise and consumer revenue was about equal, she said.

The company is also buying in custom chips while continuing to work with external chip manufacturers. The latest announcement won't replace Nvidia or AMD accelerators, but it'll be alongside them as Jalapeño.
