Victoria Fire Reaches Emergency Levels
Synopsis
A fast-moving grassfire in south-west Victoria that has reached emergency level is forcing residents in some rural towns to shelter immediately. “If you are not prepared, if we gave you a warning now it is too late… this fire is jumping from tree top to tree top,” he said as the fire at Carlisle River and Gellibrand heads south towards homes. As a significant change of direction in the wind was forecast to move the fire’s front, emergency services have warned all residents in the area should seek shelter, stay inside and protect themselves from the heat and smoke.
An out-of-control bushfire in south-west Victoria has reached a life-threatening level, prompting an urgent emergency warning. The fire broke out south of the intersection of Carlisle River Road and Walls-Skinner Track and is travelling quickly in a southerly direction. Emergency services have advised residents in places like Gellibrand, Carlisle River and Beech Forest that they are directly threatened. With the fire spreading rapidly and heavy smoke blanketing much of the region, officials say it is no longer safe for people to attempt to drive away.
Instead of evacuation, everyone in the fire’s path is being told to shelter in place immediately. Homes and lives are under threat as firefighters work on the frontlines to slow the flames. However, hot and windy weather is creating extreme fire behaviour, making conditions especially dangerous. The blaze has reached the highest warning level, and finding safe shelter from heat and flames is now the top priority.
Seeking Shelter with the Front Approaching
At this stage, the safest option is to stay inside a solid, well-built home. Move to a room on the opposite side of the house from the approaching fire. Close all doors and windows tightly and use wet towels or blankets to block any gaps where smoke could enter. Filling sinks, bathtubs and buckets with water is also recommended in case small embers land inside.
Keep your phone nearby and stay tuned to local radio for updates. If you are caught in a car, do not get out and run. Park in an open area with minimal vegetation, close the windows and cover yourself with a woollen blanket to protect against intense heat. Radiant heat from a bushfire can be deadly even before flames arrive, so remaining covered and behind solid protection is critical.
Huge Weather Shift Arriving
Forecasters are predicting a major wind change around 5:00 pm today. While a cool change might seem positive, it can significantly increase danger by pushing the fire in a new direction very quickly. This shift is expected to drive the blaze toward Barongarook, placing additional communities at risk. Fire crews are preparing for the change and warning residents who may soon be in the fire’s path.
A total fire ban is in effect across almost all of Victoria. No outdoor fires are permitted, and people are urged to be extremely cautious with anything that could ignite a blaze. With temperatures climbing into the 40s in some areas, the risk of new fires remains very high. Residents are encouraged to keep checking the VicEmergency app and stay alert until conditions improve.
