Buckmaster alleged the AI company pressured him to coordinate the announcement and raised concerns that his unpublished research may have influenced its work.
OpenAI said it had developed an AI-generated solution to the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems that have challenged mathematicians for decades.
The company says thousands of AI agents worked on the problem for about 88 hours, with the resulting proof subjected to further verification.
Mathematician Raises Questions over OpenAI’s Approach
Buckmaster and Anthropic researcher Levent Alpöge had been working on related mathematics using AI tools, including OpenAI’s Codex. Buckmaster later alleged that OpenAI approached him after learning about their work and pushed for a coordinated announcement.
According to Buckmaster's account, an OpenAI scientist warned him about potentially damaging his career if he made what OpenAI considered unfounded accusations. OpenAI researcher Sébastien Bubeck acknowledged that the wording was a poor choice but said the warning concerned the consequences of making unsupported plagiarism claims.
Buckmaster has also questioned whether information from his Codex work could have indirectly contributed to OpenAI’s result. OpenAI denies accessing his unpublished work and says its researchers developed the proof independently. The company has nevertheless acknowledged that it cannot completely rule out anonymised user data having contributed to model improvement.
AI’s Race to Solve Mathematics
The dispute highlights a growing tension as AI companies increasingly position their systems as tools for scientific discovery. The Navier-Stokes problem concerns whether smooth solutions to equations describing fluid motion can develop singularities in three dimensions, a question that has remained unresolved for decades.
The associated Millennium Prize carries a US$1 million award, although OpenAI has said it does not intend to claim the prize. Its result will still face scrutiny from mathematicians before the problem can be considered formally solved.
For academia, the episode raises a broader question: as AI systems become capable of generating sophisticated mathematical proofs, how should researchers establish originality, ownership and credit when humans and AI tools are working on the same frontier problems?
