Microsoft Eyes September Launch for Next-Generation Maia 300 AI Chip

Microsoft's plans to release its Maia AI chip are progressing toward September, and the company is now negotiating with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. for more than 300,000 chips to be produced in 2027, people familiar with the matter said.
Microsoft is also seeking to secure capacity for more than 1 million Maia 300 processors, but these figures are preliminary and subject to change based on component supply and negotiations with TSMC.
Microsoft Expands Its In-House Chip Programme
Microsoft Maia 300 would be the next in a series of custom silicon from the world's largest software maker, which began with the first Maia chip in November 2023.
In January 2026, Microsoft unveiled the Maia 200, which will be produced using 3-nanometer technology from TSMC. Microsoft has been developing its own chips to accelerate generative artificial intelligence workloads on Azure, its cloud computing platform, and has sought to exert more control over its technology ecosystem.
Microsoft is also seeking to persuade large cloud customers, such as Anthropic, to use its Maia processors. Microsoft has been working on its own silicon, but Wall, general manager of Azure Maia, said that volumes were not yet finalised.
The industry is seeing a boom in demand for AI chips, which has seen a number of major U.S. tech companies develop their own processors.
Google has its Tensor Processing Units, while Amazon has its Trainium chips for certain AI workloads.
Demand for semiconductors for AI infrastructure is also driving the broader semiconductor industry, with demand for AI chips fueling a 35% year-over-year revenue increase for TSMC in the first quarter of 2026.
Microsoft's financial results for the fiscal third quarter, ended March 31, 2026, showed the extent of its investment in cloud infrastructure and AI. Revenue rose 18% year-over-year to $82.9 billion, and Microsoft Cloud revenue was $54.5 billion, with Azure and other cloud services revenue rising 40% year-over-year.
Microsoft's revenue from its AI business reached over $37 billion, up 123% year-over-year.
