Listen Labs Scraps $1.5B Funding Round as Salesforce Acquisition Talks Emerge
Synopsis
AI customer research startup Listen Labs has abandoned a planned $125 million funding round at a $1.5 billion valuation as Salesforce explores a potential $2 billion acquisition, highlighting the growing value of AI tools that turn customer conversations into business intelligence.
AI customer research startup Listen Labs has walked away from a signed term sheet for a $125 million Series C at a $1.5 billion valuation, as the three-year-old company explores a potential acquisition by Salesforce, according to people familiar with the matter.
Menlo Ventures was set to lead the funding round but the financing never closed.
The decision to abandon a signed term sheet is unusual in venture capital and comes as Salesforce has reportedly held talks to acquire Listen Labs for around $2 billion.
The discussions remain unresolved and may not result in a transaction.
AI-Powered Customer Research Draws Enterprise Demand
Listen Labs uses artificial intelligence to conduct customer interviews through audio and video. Its platform can develop research questions, interview participants, analyse conversations and turn the findings into reports and presentation-ready material.
The approach is aimed at a traditional market research process that can take weeks and require significant spending. Listen says its AI interviewer can conduct large numbers of one-to-one conversations while adapting questions based on participants' responses.
The company has already interviewed more than one million people and serves enterprise customers including Microsoft, Anthropic, Google, Nestlé and Sweetgreen. In January, Listen raised $69 million in Series B funding, taking its total funding to about $100 million and its valuation to more than $500 million.
Salesforce Sees Potential in Customer Intelligence
An acquisition could strengthen Salesforce's broader AI strategy by giving its Agentforce platform deeper access to customer opinions and preferences.
Listen Labs could help Salesforce understand what customers want, identify changing product needs and potentially use those insights to support sales recommendations. However, the reported $2 billion price would represent a steep premium over Listen's previous valuation. TechCrunch reported that the startup generates around $30 million in annualised revenue, implying a valuation of roughly 67 times revenue at the reported acquisition price.
If Salesforce talks collapse, venture investors expect Listen Labs could return to the funding market and seek a valuation of $2 billion or more, reflecting the growing investor interest in AI-powered customer research.
