Lenovo Pulls the Plug on US Patent Fight Over Asus Laptops

Lenovo has asked a California court to dismiss its patent lawsuit against Asus after ending its appeal of a related ITC ruling.
Personal computer maker Lenovo's patent infringement suit against Asus regarding the ZenBook laptops is set to conclude with the Los Angeles Federal Court approving the company's plea to dismiss the case.
The filing was submitted to the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California on Sept. 17. The computer maker requested to dismiss with prejudice, which means that it is seeking that the same claims not be re-asserted.
Four Patents Behind the Dispute
Lenovo's patent grievance against Asus was submitted in 2023 when the Chinese company filed a lawsuit against Taiwan's Asus for allegedly violating four patents in its ZenBook Pro and ZenBook Flip 14 laptops.
The patents comprise wireless communications, diagonal touchpad scrolling and a hinge design which allows a laptop to convert into a tablet. Lenovo had asked for unspecified damages, such as lost profits, royalties and an injunction against the alleged infringement.
In 2024, the California case was paused because a similar case was ongoing before the US International Trade Commission. In 2025, the ITC ruled in favor of Asus and in August 2026, Lenovo withdrew its appeal.
This new patent infringement case between Lenovo and Asus, filed in the U.S. is called Lenovo (United States) v. Asustek Computer, No. 5:23-cv-05892. There were no immediate comments from both companies on the filing.
Lenovo and Asus Remain Major PC Vendors
Both firms are a top contender in the global PC industry, making the Lenovo Asus patent suit a compelling case to follow. Gartner had projected global PC shipments in the first quarter of 2026 at 62.8 million units, a rise of 4% compared to the same period last year.
The shipment of Lenovo's PCs totaled 16.65 million, representing 26.5% of the global market, while Asus's shipment was 4.21 million, which accounted for 6.7% of the global market. Asus, Lenovo and HP, Dell and Apple completed the top five PC vendors with 19.3%, 16.5% and 10.6%, respectively, in the ranking done by Gartner.
However, in August, Gartner's latest research revealed PC demand contracted due to rising average PC price due to the high cost of memory.
In fiscal 2025/26, Lenovo generated $83.1 billion in revenue, compared with the previous year, and the adjusted net income rose by 42% to approximately $2 billion.
Now that the court in California has heard Lenovo's request to dismiss, it will determine the case of the Lenovo Asus patent battle.
