Synopsis

Canva is accelerating its AI strategy as Google Pics enters the business design market, intensifying competition around AI-powered image creation, editing and enterprise workflows.

Canva is accelerating its artificial intelligence strategy as Google moves deeper into business-focused visual creation with Google Pics, putting fresh pressure on the Australian design software company to defend its position in an increasingly crowded market.

Google launched Pics within Google Workspace on September 1, offering AI image generation and detailed editing through prompts.

Users can create visuals, modify individual objects and text, translate words inside images, upscale content and collaborate on designs.

The tool is also being integrated into Docs, Slides and Drive, giving Google a direct route into everyday business workflows.

Canva Bets on Its Own AI Engine

The timing is significant for Canva. The company previously slowed the rollout of its more ambitious AI products after the cost of using advanced models made the economics difficult. Co-founder Cliff Obrecht said in August that Canva had since reduced the cost of running its AI products by 90 per cent.

Canva is now testing the next iteration of its AI strategy, reportedly known internally as Canva AI 2.1. Sources cited in the original report said the company is also preparing a new foundational image model developed by its research team. They claim the model is performing strongly against several open-source alternatives, although Canva has not publicly confirmed those details.

The company’s phased testing has reportedly produced higher usage, publishing activity and upgrades. That could prove important as Canva seeks to turn AI experimentation into a scalable business advantage.

The Battle Is Moving Beyond Image Generation

Google is not Canva’s only emerging rival. Anthropic launched Claude Design in April, allowing users to create designs, prototypes, presentations and other visual work through conversation with Claude. More than one million people used the product in its first week, according to Anthropic.

The bigger challenge may be changing user behaviour. Simple creative jobs that once required Canva can increasingly be handled through AI assistants.

Canva is therefore leaning harder into its templates, brand assets and enterprise capabilities. Obrecht has argued that prompts alone do not replace the discovery and refinement involved in visual design.

For Canva, the race is no longer simply about producing better images. It is about remaining the place where AI-generated ideas become finished, branded and usable work.
