Apple Targets AI Users with Faster Mac Mini, Mac Studio as Inventories Tighten

Apple has unveiled a more powerful Mac mini and refreshed its Mac Studio, placing greater emphasis on devices capable of running artificial intelligence workloads locally.
The move comes as consumers and developers increasingly use Macs to host autonomous AI agents.
The new Mac mini starts at $899, $100 more than its predecessor and is available with Apple's M6 chip or M5 Pro.
Apple said the M6-powered version can deliver up to four times faster AI performance than the previous M4 model, alongside twice the graphics and storage speeds.
The machines have gained attention among users running AI agents such as OpenClaw locally.
Strong demand has reportedly depleted inventory at some Apple stores which highlights a growing consumer interest in always-on AI computing.
Mac Studio Targets Heavier AI Workloads
Apple also upgraded its Mac Studio desktop range with the M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips.
The machines are aimed at developers and professional users who need substantially more computing power. They can run large AI models directly on the device and combine the computing capacity of multiple systems for demanding workloads.
The M5 Max Mac Studio starts at $2,499 while the M5 Ultra model starts at $5,499. Both prices are higher than the previous generation which started at $1,999.
The higher-end Mac mini with M5 Pro offers up to an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU which positions it for professional workloads including visual effects as well as AI development.
Apple Prepares for Leadership Transition
The launch also arrives at an important moment for Apple. It is expected to be the final major product unveiling of Tim Cook's tenure as chief executive, ahead of his planned handover to hardware executive John Ternus. The transition will mark one of Apple's most closely watched leadership changes in years.
The new Macs also arrive amid rising component costs. Strong demand for memory chips from AI data centres has increased pressure across the technology supply chain, contributing to Apple's decision to raise prices on some Mac and iPad models earlier this year.
With its latest desktops, Apple is positioning the Mac as more than a traditional personal computer.
As AI agents become more capable, the company is betting that consumers and professionals will increasingly want powerful machines that can run those systems continuously and locally.
