Diraq Brings Quantum Computing into an Australian Commercial Data Center

Diraq is bringing quantum computing into Australia’s commercial data center infrastructure through a partnership with Equinix, deploying an eight-qubit silicon system designed to operate alongside conventional servers, AI and cloud computing.

Australia’s quantum computing ambitions are moving from the laboratory into the infrastructure that powers the digital economy.

Sydney-based quantum startup Diraq is partnering with Equinix to deploy a quantum computer inside an Equinix data center in Sydney, in what the companies say will be the first such deployment in an Australian commercial data center.

The installation is also expected to mark the world’s first silicon spin quantum computer operating inside a shared commercial data center.

Scheduled for completion in October 2026, the system will place quantum computing alongside conventional servers and the AI, cloud and high-performance computing infrastructure already used by enterprises.

Chapter one

A Quantum Computer Designed for the Data Center

Diraq’s system will initially feature a silicon chip containing eight qubits, supported by self-contained cryogenic cooling and control electronics. The complete system is designed to fit into Equinix’s existing infrastructure with minimal integration and consume less than 20kW of power.

Its upgrade path is particularly significant. Increasing the number of qubits will require replacing the quantum chip rather than rebuilding the surrounding infrastructure. This could allow the system to scale while retaining the same data-center environment.

The deployment will also allow Diraq to test how quantum systems operate in a live commercial environment, including secure connectivity and interaction with classical CPUs and GPUs.

From Silicon Chips to Scalable Quantum Computing

Founded in 2022, Diraq is developing quantum processors based on silicon quantum-dot technology. Its strategy is to use manufacturing techniques similar to those behind today’s semiconductor chips rather than relying entirely on specialised quantum infrastructure.

That approach recently gained momentum. In July 2026, Diraq and semiconductor research organisation imec demonstrated coherent operation and readout of an eight-qubit silicon spin-qubit array fabricated using a 300mm CMOS-compatible manufacturing process.

Diraq has also said its technology is designed to eventually support millions and ultimately billions of qubits on silicon chips. The company’s broader objective is to develop fault-tolerant quantum computers capable of working alongside conventional computing and AI systems.

For Equinix, the project provides a practical test of whether quantum computing can become part of mainstream digital infrastructure. For Diraq, it represents a crucial step in proving that its compact silicon-based approach can move beyond controlled laboratory environments and towards commercial deployment.
