Synopsis

UK pay awards have cooled to 3%, with Brightmine data showing employers are keeping salary increases subdued as higher employment costs, tighter budgets and a softer labor market shape pay decisions heading into 2027.

UK employers are becoming more cautious on pay increases, with median pay awards cooling to 3% in the three months to August, according to a recent data from HR data and insights firm Brightmine.

The figures add to signs of a softer UK labor market as businesses contend with higher employment costs and tighter budgets.

Brightmine Pay Data Shows UK Wage Growth Settling

The latest Brightmine pay data UK figures show the median pay award was revised down to 3% from 3.2% in the three months to July and remained at 3% through August. The latest analysis covers 45 pay awards implemented between June 1 and August 31, representing more than 755,000 UK employees.

Pay settlements have also become increasingly concentrated. Brightmine said 71% of awards fell between 3% and 4% while 3% was the most common individual award, accounting for 32% of settlements. The data indicates that employers continue to provide pay rises but the size of those increases is being constrained by affordability concerns.

Chapter two

UK Pay Awards Could Remain at 3% in 2027

Employers are forecasting a median pay award of 3% for the year ahead, compared with realised awards of 3.2% for the year to August 31. Brightmine said this points to pay growth remaining relatively subdued into 2027.

Sheila Attwood, Brightmine’s HR insights and data lead, said pay awards appeared likely to remain around 3% in the medium term. The company’s forecast research also found that affordability is putting downward pressure on pay decisions, while employers continue to balance employee expectations with rising employment costs.

Bank of England Keeps an Eye on Pay Pressures

The latest UK labor market pay settlements data could provide some reassurance to Bank of England officials as they assess domestic inflation pressures. The central bank is weighing an interest rate hike in November, making wage trends an important part of the economic picture.
