Christine Lagarde Emerges as Potential WEF Successor as ECB Term Runs to October 2027
Synopsis
The European Central Bank chief is being considered for the WEF presidency after reportedly telling its board she was “ready to serve”, with the organisation still working through its succession plans following founder Klaus Schwab’s departure.
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde could become the next president of the World Economic Forum, with the veteran policymaker reportedly emerging as a potential candidate for the role in 2027.
Swiss newspaper NZZ reported on Sunday that Lagarde was described as a “putative candidate” during a WEF board meeting near Geneva this week. Sources cited by the newspaper said she also indicated she was “ready to serve”.
Lagarde has served on the WEF board for several terms which puts her in a strong position as the organisation works through a major leadership transition.
WEF Faces Leadership Change After Schwab's Departure
The potential appointment comes after WEF founder Klaus Schwab stepped down from the organisation's leadership last year.
The board is currently co-chaired by Roche Vice Chairman André Hoffmann and BlackRock CEO Larry Fink. According to NZZ, Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam said during the meeting that the succession process for Fink and Hoffmann should be settled internally as suitable candidates were already available.
No decision was made on exactly when Lagarde could assume the presidency. The board reportedly agreed that Fink and Hoffmann should continue to chair the annual meeting in Davos in January 2027.
The leadership change comes at an important time for the WEF whose annual Davos gathering brings together political leaders, executives, investors and policymakers from around the world.
Lagarde's ECB Term Runs Until October 2027
Lagarde's possible move to the WEF would also come before the end of her current role at the ECB. Her eight-year term as ECB president is scheduled to end in October 2027.
She said last year that she was determined to complete her ECB term, following earlier speculation that she could leave early to take a position at the WEF.
Her potential appointment would bring extensive experience in global economic policy to the organisation. Before leading the ECB, Lagarde served as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund and as France's Finance Minister.
For the WEF, her background could offer continuity and international credibility as it seeks to shape its agenda beyond the Schwab era.
