Puck in Talks for $250M RedBird Investment to Fund Growth
Synopsis
Puck is in advanced talks for a RedBird Capital Partners investment at a $250 million valuation, as the newsletter publisher seeks to accelerate growth while retaining its journalist-led model and editorial independence.
Newsletter publisher Puck is in advanced talks to secure an investment from RedBird Capital Partners at a valuation of around $250 million, in a deal that would make the media-focused investment firm its leading investor and help fund the company’s next phase of growth.
The proposed transaction would involve Puck’s existing institutional investors selling their stakes to RedBird and thus giving the investment firm a significant position in the company.
Puck said the deal is being structured as a “strategic recapitalization” and that its founders and journalists would retain their stakes. The company also stressed that its editorial independence would remain unchanged.
Founded in 2021, Puck was co-founded by former New York Times and Condé Nast journalist Jon Kelly who leads its editorial operations.
The publication covers media, finance, entertainment, fashion and politics, with its business model built around paid subscriptions and journalist-led audiences.
Puck has about 50,000 paying subscribers. The company has also previously raised roughly $20 million from investors including TPG’s growth arm, Standard Investments and J Rothschild Capital Management.
A Creator-Led Media Model
Puck has differentiated itself by giving journalists equity in the company and a share of subscription revenue. The model encourages writers to build individual audiences while linking their financial incentives to the publication’s growth.
The company expanded its footprint last year by acquiring Air Mail, the luxury and travel-focused digital magazine founded by former Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter. RedBird became an investor in Puck following that acquisition.
RedBird Deepens Media Investments
The potential Puck investment adds to RedBird’s growing portfolio across media and entertainment. The firm is among the major backers of David Ellison’s Paramount-Skydance bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, a transaction that is facing challenges from several U.S. states.
RedBird’s other investments include Artists Equity, the studio founded with actors Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, and Fulwell Entertainment, formed through the merger of Fulwell 73 and The SpringHill Company. It also backs EverPass Media which holds commercial distribution rights for NFL Sunday Ticket.
For Puck, the proposed transaction would provide additional resources to expand its subscription-led model while preserving the journalist-focused structure that has helped it build a loyal paying audience.
