Xiaomi Bets on EV Growth With Sky Nomad SUV Debut
Synopsis
The technology giant has unveiled a new SUV series as it diversifies beyond smartphones and strengthens its presence in the electric vehicle sector.
Xiaomi just unveiled another new model for its burgeoning automotive business: a new line of extended-range electric vehicles (EREV) called Xiaomi Sky Nomad.
The first model is expected to be the Xiaomi N90 SUV, measuring nearly 17.4 feet (5.3 meters) in length, that can reportedly deliver about 250-300 miles of battery-only range and more than 930 miles of total extended range. The price and production timing have yet to be disclosed.
Xiaomi hopes the vehicle will take a bigger piece of a burgeoning EREV market.
New Vehicle Targets Expanding EREV Market
An EREV vehicle has both a petrol engine, and a motor that helps charge up a battery to get more mileage. The Xiaomi Sky Nomad SUV comes as a new category alongside Xiaomi’s SU7 sedan and the YU7 SUV, and is designed as a spacious family-friendly SUV. Xiaomi is putting itself in one of the hottest segments of the Chinese vehicle market where the demand has been fuelled by companies like Li Auto and Aito.
In 2025, sales of electric cars around the world surpassed 20 million.
China represented 60% of the world market for EVs, with the country responsible for three-quarters of global production, based on the International Energy Agency’s Global EV Outlook 2026. EV sales have been continuously going up.
EV Business Continues to Grow
Xiaomi’s Sky Nomad SUV adds to the brand’s rapid development of its vehicle business. Xiaomi reported a total of 99.1 billion yuan in revenue for the first quarter of 2026, with its smart EV and AI business reporting revenue of 19.9 billion yuan.
The company’s car sales in the first quarter of 2026 were 80,856 units, an increase as its production capability expanded following the introduction of its prior car models.
Xiaomi sees the Sky Nomad series as a vehicle designed to provide the families with plenty of useful and habitable space, the company founder and chief executive Lei Jun stated.
The Chinese technology firm also announced it expects to introduce its cars in Europe in 2027, but hasn’t yet stated whether its cars will be made driving on the right-hand side nor if it plans to introduce the Xiaomi Sky Nomad SUV to Australia.
