Barca Forced to Move Gamper Match to Smaller Stadium

FC Barcelona has officially delayed its much-anticipated return to Camp Nou. The club had planned to host the Italian team Como for the Jaun Gamper trophy on August 10. However, they were unable to get the needed permits from the Barcelona city council due to ongoing construction and compliance issues.

The city council said that the current state of the stadium does not meet the safety and access requirements required for a large public event. Without approval, they had no choice but to find a new venue for their traditional season-opening match.

City’s Strict Rule Causes Trouble For the Club

The licensing problem is part of a wider trend in Barcelona. The city has become known for its tough stance on permits and has targeted many sectors recently. More than 100 bars and restaurants were fined over permit issues, and nearly 6000 tourist apartments are facing action.

First Deputy Mayor Laia Bonet has made it clear that the rules are not up for any debate. This strict action has made it hard for FC Barcelona to secure approval quickly, even for historic stadiums like Camp Nou.

Hamper Trophy to Be Played at Estadi Johan Cruyff

Instead of Camp Nou, Barcelona will host the Joan Gamper Trophy at Estadi Johan Cryuff, how much smaller than that usually holds matches for the women’s and youth teams.

This stadium allows just 6000 fans, which is a huge drop from the usual 99,000. Even the Olympic Stadium, used during renovations, seats 50,000 fans. The club has planned to welcome at least 20,000-30,000 fans at a partially finished Camp Nou, but the plan is no longer possible.

While Estadi Johan Cruyff is a modern and well-equipped Stadium, it’s not meant for first-team matches. The limited seating will affect ticket sales and revenue, and even many fans will miss out on seeing the day live.
