Commonwealth Bank of Australia appoints new CIO, CTO to boost AI strategy

In technology leadership changes at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Victoria Ledda has been appointed Group Chief Information Officer and Rodrigo Castillo Group Chief Technology Officer. The appointments, which are conditional upon the normal regulatory approvals, start on July 1. According to the bank, the changes supportits push towards digital, data and artificial intelligence capabilities. CBA has also beefed up its AI work via a couple of key leadership appointments and the launch of several internal initiatives around artificial intelligence.

Australia’s largest lender Commonwealth Bank of Australia announced new appointments to its technology leadership team as it continues to expand its digital, data, and artificial intelligence capabilities.

Victoria Ledda was appointed Group Chief Information Officer and Rodrigo Castillo as Group Chief Technology Officer at the bank. The appointments are subject to regulatory approvals and will become effective from July 1.

The change comes at a time when artificial intelligence is getting more expensive and complicated to implement, while CBA has ramped up its investment in technology to improve customer experience and deepen its operations.

Roles of Victoria Ledda and Rodrigo Castillo 

Victoria Ledda will oversee business-aligned technology strategy and delivery for the entire group. Rodrigo Castillo, Head of New Faces will manage enterprise tech foundations: engineering; security and AI capabilities

CBA Chief Executive Matt Comyn explained the appointments line up with CBA wanting to provide better, safer and more resilient tech for their customers. Ledda has been with CBA since 2021, holding a variety of senior technology roles inside the bank. Castillo was formerly the Chief Technology Officer at CBA until early 2023. 

CBA Ramps Up Strategy on Refreshed AI

CBA has long been framing itself as an early adopter of artificial intelligence. Recently, the bank organised an internal summit with Sam Altman. The Chief AI Officer role has been filled by Ranil Boteju to support the bank’s AI strategy.

These new appointments come as banks keep investing in technology and AI capabilities. Similarly, rival ANZ Group made the announcement that it appointed a Chief Data and AI Officer for the first time in late April as Bloomberg reported.
