Spotify to Sell Physical Books Through Bookshop Partnership Rollout
Synopsis
Spotify will soon let users buy physical books directly through its app using Bookshop.org, starting in the U.S. and U.K. The feature connects audiobook discovery with print purchases, while Bookshop.org handles fulfilment. Spotify also introduced Page Match, allowing users to sync reading and listening. The move expands Spotify’s audiobook strategy and positions the platform as a broader destination for book discovery. By linking physical and audio formats, Spotify is strengthening its role in the publishing ecosystem without handling inventory, shipping, or retail logistics directly.
Spotify is about to enable U.S. and United Kingdom users to purchase physical books within their app via a deal with Bookshop.org. The feature links print editions to the audio book collection of Spotify. Bookshop.org will do fulfillment and delivery, and Spotify will also gain affiliate revenue off of the purchases on its platform.
The company is also introducing a new feature, which will allow the user to buy hardcopy books when listening to audiobooks in the app. Supported audiobook pages will have a Buy in print button on them. Upon the choice, the users will be redirected to the Bookshop.org where they will have an opportunity to make the purchase.
Spotify will not handle inventory and shipping. Bookshop.org will deal with orders and delivery, and Spotify will get a referral commission.
It will start rolling out in spring 2026 and the first two countries are the U.S. and U.K. Spotify is yet to announce its plans to expand to other countries.
Page Match feature relates physical reading
Spotify has also launched a new feature named Page Match in addition to the physical book sales. This functionality enables one to scan a page of a real book with his/her phone camera. The application then skips to the same moment in the audio book version.
This assists the user to alternate between listening and reading without distorting the reading contents when traveling and listening at home and vice versa.
Spotify has expanded the number of audiobooks in its catalogue to over 500,000 in English language. The company has been gradually introducing features since joining audiobooks in 2022 to enhance discovery and continuity of listening.
The discovery of audiobooks with direct correlation to physical book purchases is furthered by the addition of physical books.
The audio book is a significant element of the wider content approach by the Spotify brand that goes beyond music and podcasts.
Spotify is going beyond audiobook streaming and book discovery and acquisition. Spotify provides audiobooks and physical books, which makes its app more connected, a reading experience.
This puts Spotify in line with other rivals such as Amazon which are already incorporating print, ebook, and audiobooks.
Partnership Model Reduces Risk and Supports Bookstores
The collaboration with Bookshop.org will enable Spotify to venture into the physical book sales without having to take care of logistics. Bookshop.org collaborates with independent bookstores and gives them revenue.
This will enable Spotify to enter the book retail sector and it will be supported by an existing fulfillment network.
Spotify claimed the Page Match makes it possible to switch between audio and physical reading without losing the position, and the feature described on the Page Match is what unites both.
Bookshop.org assured that it will handle the order fulfillment, and Spotify will be the discovery and referral platform.
Hardcopy is in Use Despite the Growth of Digital
As much as the audiobooks have been increasing at a high rate, hardcopy books still play a significant role in the publishing world. The two formats are still in use among many readers at the convenience of any time.
This hybrid reading habit in which users switch between print and audio is seen in the move by Spotify.
Spotify has grown its collection of audiobooks and introduced new features to enhance functionality since its introduction in 2022. The audiobooks are part of its long-term content strategy being positioned by the company.
The introduction of buying physical books is an addition to that ecosystem that does not need Spotify to directly operate in retail.
The retail physical book buying will initially be available in the U.S. and the U.K. Spotify may see the adoption before reaching other markets.
Spotify will probably keep going on with audiobook tools and related applications. More consolidation between audiobook listening and book discovery could also happen as the company increases its book services.
