Synopsis

ServiceM8 is a job management app built for trade and field-service businesses. We review its features, pricing, Apple and Android support, integrations, pros, cons and how it compares with Tradify.

If you’ve got a plumbing, electrical, cleaning, handyman or lawn care business and are looking to stop chasing after paper job sheets, texts and spreadsheets, ServiceM8 is one of the first names that springs to mind. In short, yes, by 2026 this is a really great job management tool for small trade and field service businesses and it works best in an Apple ecosystem. Since that one fact is what justifies nearly everything else about such a fit with your business, it's an early juncture worth understanding.

01
Chapter one

What ServiceM8 Actually Does

ServiceM8 is designed to take a job from the first phone call right to collecting a paid invoice, no filing cabinet in sight. A customer calls, you book a job, dispatch a technician and the tech opens the job via phone with directions & notes/photos attached. They fill in a form on site, snap 1–2 pictures and the invoice can be sent immediately when marked as done!

This is the office side of this known as the dispatch board. It’s an easy screen for seeing all work, dragging it onto a tech’s schedule, and watching where their team is in map form so the nearest available person is dispatched to a new job as opposed to whoever was free on paper instead.

All your customer interactions, photos, notes, texts, emails and forms, are automatically recorded into something ServiceM8 refers to as the Job Diary. This is just a straightforward running chronicle for every job where if a client phones up three months later when your company has forgotten what was done, they can be told straight away the complete history instead of buried in someone’s inbox.

And there’s a Job Checkout Report that consolidates everything from one visit, pictures, completed checklists, materials used, into a tidy package when the technician’s done. For those trades that require a mountain of paperwork (like safety checks or compliance forms), ServiceM8 allows you to take that paperwork and make it into an electronic form that your staff have to complete before they can mark the job as closed.

Chapter two

Fast at First, Not Just Compatible With Apple

This is the most important part to read before making your decision. ServiceM8 isn’t simply “available” on iPhone and iPad, Apple devices are literally the platform it is built for in a way that absolutely shows with its level of integration.

In a job file, technicians can scan the room in seconds to measure square footage and chart an approximate layout of the space, all on an iPhone or iPad that has LiDAR capability. Using Tap to Pay means you can take payments right off the back of your iPhone, so there’s no extra card reader to keep with you or charge. The camera also has some other tricks up its sleeve too: It can scan barcodes that will help populate an invoice with parts, automatically scan documents from a page, and read text right off the page. The technician can start a timer on site using the Apple Watch or get an alert when it’s time to go to your next job, without pulling out their phone. Your new iPhone can even display live job and travel status directly on the lock screen.

The two devices have different use cases in the field: an iPhone and an iPad. The iPhone goes in a pocket. Speedy directions, taking site photos, texting a client, signing on the virtual dotted line at the door. When it gets to the bigger jobs: quoting in front of a client, reading a blueprint, filling out longer compliance forms, or even running meth alongside an email (or accounting app) with iPad’s split-view capabilities.

At the minimum, running the latest version with all these whizzy new features will require something ably powered by iOS 17 or iPadOS 17, or later, and a relatively recent phone or tablet to reap the full benefits of that camera and scanning tech.

Chapter three

Is ServiceM8 Available for Android, or Just iOS/Mac?

Yes, but not quite the same experience. For field staff and subcontractors who do not carry an iPhone, ServiceM8 offers a free Android app: ServiceM8 Lite (available for download from Google Play).

A technician on Android has access to their schedule, client and job details, time-on-site tracking, checklist/form work, and can take photos before closing a job! For someone whose job is merely to show up, perform some work and document events, those are the basics.

What it doesn’t provide is any insight into the more sophisticated half of the app. How does ServiceM8 Lite compare to the full version? To take payments on site, utilise the built-in messaging tools and create proposals or quotes you will need an iPhone, iPad or web dashboard, not available in ServiceM8 Lite. And the truth is that Android supports doing, not Android supports running. A basic daily routine can be done from Android for a technician. For an Android user who is a business owner or office manager, you will be working through the web browser instead of a native app built specifically for them.

This is great if your Android users are technicians who really only need to see their day and tick jobs down. It doesn’t exist for full functionality on an Android phone or tablet.

The AI Features

ServiceM8 has announced a couple of new AI tools that you might want to know about. What this means is that Auto-Write can listen to a technician dictate rough notes into a microphone and convert those notes into a clean message or email to send off to the clients.

Auto-Invoice parses the notes entered for a job that was completed and populates line items on the invoice so someone isn’t copying them all out manually. Both alleviate but neither replaces, having a person check the outcome, while both reduce the admin that tends to build up at the end of a working day.

ServiceM8: Pricing and What Each Plan Includes

While the category is already not big on charging by user, ServiceM8 takes it even further and doesn’t charge per user at all which helps benefit small teams. Rather, it bases its pricing on the number of jobs you send each month and includes unlimited staff across all plans. Roughly, as of 2026:

  •  Free — Single User, few jobs a month, basic features. Perfect for a new sole trader.
  • Starter - around $29/month, unlimited users (but low limits/other restrictions), 50 jobs a month.
  • GROW - $79 or so a month, unlimited users and about 150 jobs/month.
  • Premium - $149-ish/month, unlimited users, gives about 500 jobs a fortnight.
  • Premium Plus - $349/month, unlimited users, higher volumes with an extra fee over the cap.

Note: Job limits and inclusions do change so check the latest numbers from ServiceM8s on the pricing page before signing up.

Per-seat tools tend to charge a per-user fee, while our pricing level with a five-person crew and individual operator costs the same at the same volume job count level (and is statistically cheaper). If a team is making far more than 150 dispatches per month, that method starts to come closer to parity with flat-rate, per-user competitors, much worth running the numbers for your own volume as you shouldn’t just assume it will always be cheaper.

What Users Like

This is, when combining them in independent reviews, a couple of points come up over and over: very easy to learn even requiring no instruction for field staff, offline working in places such as basements or low-signal areas that sync later; and bills sent as soon as the job is marked done are usually settled more quickly. It has plenty of free add-ons and automations, such as automatic “on the way” texts to customers.

08
Chapter eight

Where It Falls Short

Top gripes: the Android app is objectively stripped back vs iOS, some users say the accounting integrations have sync issues now and again, that form setup and automations on the admin side take longer to learn than suggested by the field app, and that support runs mostly through chat and email (rather than a phone line for urgent issues). It will be thin in that area too, for businesses that do not require appropriate lead tracking for digital ads, or if you have deep inventory and purchase orders to handle.

09
Chapter nine

Does ServiceM8 integrate with Xero and QuickBooks?

Yes. It integrates directly with Xero and QuickBooks Online (as well as MYOB) via ServiceM8. If a technician is taking payment on site, or an invoice is marked paid, it comes through in its own time to sync with the ledger so nobody has to type the same numbers into two systems. This is one area that ServiceM8 always get unstinting praise, because the bookkeeper can continue working in their accounting package they know, without duplicating efforts.

It’s not just accounting, it also integrates with tools like Zapier and Mailchimp to connect customer records that sync with marketing or automation workflows, so the accounting sync isn’t the only integration on offer, just the one most small trade businesses will care about first.

How ServiceM8 Stacks Up Against Tradify & Other Field Service Software

ServiceM8 finds itself in a busy market for job management tools but the one comparison that is made consistently, is with Tradify, the two are constantly compared to each other because they have similar customer bases. ServiceM8 is cheaper, suited well for small teams who use mostly Apple products but works offline. Tradify, which tends to be a more straightforward interface for some users, is billed per user and does work correctly on Android. ServiceM8 is also typically the winner if you carry iPhones as a team and are watching your costs. For teams that are mixed-device or nearly wholly Android, the choice is a no-brainer: Tradify.

Who Should Actually Use It

Ideal for handymen, plumbers, electricians, cleaners and small teams, ServiceM8 is best suited to sole traders running on iOS/Apple devices for reasonable quoting-to-invoice workflows without your software bill growing every time you hire someone. It is a poorer fit for companies that are nearly entirely Android, for bigger operations dispatching very high job quantities or for anybody requiring differences in stock monitoring than basic possession tracking.

12
Chapter twelve

The Verdict

In 2026, ServiceM8 is a purpose-built job management app that does the job well for small trade businesses, it has been around a while and is very much tried-and-tested This is really hard to beat on price, ease of use, and the fact that as an iPhone task manager, it leverages so much functionality built right into the iPhone itself if your team lives in Apple land. However, if your team is on Android it still runs, just not optimally, so before rejecting the Lite app in favour of either extreme, give it a go yourself.
