French automaker Renault has announced a new defense partnership with Thales to develop a military vehicle as European rearmament gains pace.

The project converges Renault industrial manufacturing skills with Thales Secure communications technologies into a military vehicle that is able to fulfill multiple missions and can be manufactured quickly at competitive costs.

New Defence Collaboration

The partnership would involve developing a multi-role military vehicle with advanced communications systems provided by Thales, Renault said. Aimed at combining their strengths to speed production and deliver a lower cost option for defence clients.

Europe's Rising Defence Spending

It follows a push by European countries to boost defence spending in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and changes to American foreign policy under President Donald Trump. European governments look to strengthen military capabilities and the drive towards new defence technologies is stimulated by an enduringly shifting security environment.

Renault has received requests from France's defence ministry to support military programmes, including plans to produce aerial drones with drone maker Turgis Gaillard.

A prototype called the 4 TROOP will be unveiled at the Eurosatory defence show near Paris. Renault's step into defence-oriented manufacture, with this launch allows the company to move away from its core automotive space.
