Nvidia unlikely to invest $100B in OpenAI as IPO plans take shape
Synopsis
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the company is unlikely to invest $100 billion in OpenAI because the artificial intelligence developer is preparing for a potential IPO. Nvidia has instead finalized a $30 billion investment in the company’s latest funding round. The development reflects growing global investment in AI infrastructure and chips as technology companies expand computing capacity needed to train advanced artificial intelligence systems and support rising demand for AI services.

Key Highlights
- Nvidia CEO says $100 billion OpenAI investment unlikely as AI company prepares for potential IPO.
- Nvidia finalized a $30 billion investment in OpenAI’s latest funding round.
- OpenAI’s recent funding valued the AI developer at around $840 billion.
- Nvidia reported $130.5 billion revenue in fiscal 2025 driven by AI chip demand.
Nvidia will not be able to invest as much as $100 billion in OpenAI as the artificial intelligence company moves closer to a potential initial public offering, chief executive Jensen Huang said.
Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference, Huang said the opportunity to invest at that level is unlikely because OpenAI is expected to pursue a public listing. The AI developer has been raising large amounts of capital to expand computing infrastructure needed for advanced models.
Nvidia has instead finalized an investment of about $30 billion in OpenAI, significantly lower than the amount previously discussed during earlier funding talks.
Nvidia’s investment position in OpenAI
Huang said the $30 billion contribution may represent the company’s final investment in OpenAI before it becomes publicly traded.
Earlier discussions around a possible $100 billion investment were based on an invitation that would have allowed Nvidia to invest gradually over time rather than a confirmed commitment.
The Nvidia chief also indicated that the company’s $10 billion investment in AI startup Anthropic could be the last major funding round Nvidia participates in if that company also moves toward an IPO.
OpenAI funding signals scale of AI capital
OpenAI recently completed one of the largest private funding rounds in the technology sector, reaching a valuation of about $840 billion.
Large technology firms and investors have committed significant capital to artificial intelligence companies as the cost of developing advanced models continues to rise. Training modern AI systems requires powerful computing clusters and specialized processors.
Industry research estimates the global artificial intelligence market could exceed $1 trillion by 2030, driven by enterprise adoption, cloud infrastructure expansion and growing demand for AI software and services.
Nvidia benefits from rising AI infrastructure spending
Nvidia has emerged as a key supplier of the graphics processing units used to train and operate AI systems across major technology companies and research labs.
The company reported $130.5 billion in revenue for fiscal 2025, more than doubling from the previous year as demand for data-center chips surged. Its data-center business has become the largest contributor to revenue as companies invest heavily in AI computing.
Market research shows Nvidia controls roughly 90% of the global AI accelerator market, reflecting the company’s dominant position in hardware used for training large language models.
Investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure is concentrated mainly in the United States, China and Europe, where governments and technology companies are expanding data-center capacity and AI research programs.
These regions host most of the world’s high-performance computing resources used for training large AI models, while other countries are increasing spending to develop their own capabilities.
