Synopsis

Google has agreed to pay about $1 billion to Form Energy to deploy a 100-hour iron-air battery system supporting a data center. The technology is designed to store renewable energy for multiple days, longer than conventional lithium-ion systems. Form Energy, founded in 2017, has raised over $800 million to develop long-duration storage as demand grows for round-the-clock carbon-free power.

Google will invest about $1 billion in Form Energy to deploy a 100-hour iron-air battery system for a data center. The project aims to support renewable energy use by providing multi-day storage. Form Energy has raised over $800 million and focuses on long-duration energy storage technology.

Chapter one

Key Highlights

  • Google to pay about $1 billion for 100-hour iron-air battery system.
  • Form Energy’s technology stores electricity for up to 100 hours.
  • Project will support a Google data center powered by renewables.
  • Long-duration storage remains a small share of global battery market.

Google has agreed to pay about $1 billion to U.S.-based startup Form Energy to deploy a large-scale 100-hour iron-air battery system to support one of its data centres, according to confirmed industry reports. The agreement represents one of the largest commercial commitments to long-duration energy storage technology to date.

The project involves a 300-megawatt battery system capable of delivering electricity continuously for up to 100 hours, or roughly four days. Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, which typically provide between four and eight hours of storage, Form Energy’s iron-air battery is designed for multi-day discharge. The technology stores electricity by converting iron into rust and reversing the process to release stored power.

Supporting Renewable Energy for Data Centres

The battery system will be linked to renewable energy sources, including wind and solar, to help stabilise the power supply for a Google data centre. Renewable generation can vary depending on weather conditions, and long-duration storage allows excess electricity to be stored and used when output drops.

Google has previously stated its goal of operating on carbon-free energy around the clock across its global operations. Long-duration storage is considered one approach to maintaining consistent, clean power for energy-intensive facilities such as data centres.

Chapter three

Form Energy’s Growth and Industry Context

Founded in 2017, Form Energy has raised more than $1 billion from investors, including Breakthrough Energy Ventures and other institutional backers. The company is manufacturing its batteries in the United States and is scaling production to meet growing demand.

According to the International Energy Agency, global battery storage capacity has expanded rapidly in recent years, largely driven by lithium-ion installations. However, most deployed systems provide short-duration storage. Technologies capable of delivering electricity for more than 10 hours remain a smaller segment of the market but are gaining attention as renewable energy adoption increases.

The financial terms beyond the reported $1 billion commitment were not publicly disclosed.
