Early Life and Career Shift
Geoffroy Henry’s journey to becoming one of Australia’s most innovative entrepreneurs began far from the logistics industry. Born into a family of five brothers and raised by a mother who fostered a competitive yet close-knit environment, Henry’s early life was marked by frequent international moves due to his father’s expatriate work, including stints in Canada and Australia.
Even as a teenager, Henry displayed an entrepreneurial spirit, importing and reselling goods to his schoolmates in Montreal. Despite these early business instincts, he initially followed a conventional path, studying at a prestigious business school near Paris and entering the world of investment banking and hedge funds.
In 2013, Henry made a decisive move that would alter his career trajectory, relocating to Australia with hopes of continuing in finance. When his desired trading and commodities positions didn’t materialise, he joined HelloFresh, then an emerging startup, as employee number 14 in Australia. This unexpected detour proved transformative, exposing him to the high-growth startup environment and the challenges of managing thousands of employees by his mid-twenties.
The Birth of Ofload
After successful stints at HelloFresh and other ventures, including the sale of Be Cool Refrigerated Couriers to HelloFresh and serving as Managing Director at EdTech company Zookal, Henry founded Ofload in March 2020. The company emerged from his recognition of significant inefficiencies in Australia’s logistics sector, particularly in road freight movement.
Ofload operates as a digitised logistics company, utilising advanced technology to optimise freight movements across Australia. The platform connects major shippers like Coca-Cola and Pepsi with over 58,000 trucking companies, addressing critical industry inefficiencies such as empty trucks and idle time. Within just three years, Henry grew the company to nearly $200 million in revenue and secured $100 million in funding from leading investment firms.
Leadership Philosophy and Work-Life Balance
Henry’s approach to leadership reflects his personal journey and values. He emphasises creating a positive environment and meaningful culture at Ofload, believing that while remote work has its place, physical interactions remain crucial for fast-growing companies. His definition of work-life balance focuses not on hours worked but on maintaining energy and the ability to disconnect when needed.
The COVID-19 pandemic presented unique challenges for Henry, particularly as an expatriate separated from family in France. He took proactive steps to maintain his mental health, working with a personal coach and establishing a rigorous exercise routine with a personal trainer. These experiences shaped his approach to both personal wellbeing and business leadership.
Investment Philosophy
Beyond his role at Ofload, Henry maintains a diverse investment portfolio, with approximately 70% in real estate, 5-10% in startups, and the remainder in public markets and infrastructure. His approach to startup investment focuses more on supporting passionate founders than scrutinising business models, accepting the high-risk nature of early-stage investing.
Vision for the Future
While many Australian startups aim for global expansion, Henry remains focused on dominating the domestic market, targeting 5-6% market share in the next four years. His approach emphasises sustainable growth and operational excellence over rapid international expansion, demonstrating a pragmatic approach to business building that has become his hallmark.
Through his journey from investment banking to transforming Australia’s freight industry, Geoffroy Henry exemplifies how embracing unexpected opportunities and maintaining resilience through challenges can lead to entrepreneurial success. His story continues to inspire others in the startup ecosystem, proving that with passion and persistence, conventional career paths can be successfully reimagined.
