FDA Recalls M&M’s Products Across 20 US States

Synopsis

A major food safety warning has been issued over M&M’s sweets in promotional packaging sold in 20 states in the U.S. The FDA alert is related to a packaging mistake, as “Make Your Mark” and the other branded gift bags did not indicate on the packaging that they contain common allergens such as peanuts, milk or soy. The candy itself is the normal recipe–it’s the fact that there isn’t adequate labelling on it which is so dangerous to people with allergies. Officials are advising consumers to compare their lot codes and discard any impacted products, or risk dangerous health reactions.

The M&M’s recall has gotten bigger than expected after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) raised alarms about a serious labelling mistake. Recently, the Minnesota-based company Beacon Promotions Inc. repackaged thousands of popular chocolate candies into special promotional bags for businesses and schools. However, these new bags, too did not have the mandatory warnings for Peanuts, Milk and Soy. Because in some individuals these ingredients can lead to life-threatening reactions, the FDA warning was made to protect food safety and prevent unintentional illness.

The recall has been designated as a Class II event on 2 February 2026. The classification is significant because for the general public, the risk of death has become lower (or at least less disconcerting), although people with particular sensitivities might still experience health problems that are “medically reversible” if they consume the candy. The error occurred when the original protective labels, which had since been replaced by branded bags for companies such as Adobe, Subaru and Xfinity in repackaging, were not removed.

How to Locate and Identify the Recalled Bags

If you picked up a small bag of M&M’s, weighing 1.3 ounces, recently, perhaps one given to you at a conference, school event or as a corporate gift, check it out right away. The affected products consist of Peanut M&M’s and regular Milk Chocolate M&M’s. For the peanut variety, packaging with the “Make Your Mark” logo and lot code M1823200 and a “best by” date of April 30, 2026, is implicated.

Regular M&M’s are trickier to track, as they were distributed under dozens of company names. On the back of the small bags, you should look for one of these lot codes: L450ARCLV03, L502FLHKP01, L523CMHKP01 or L537GMHKP01. These pouches have “best by” dates from late 2025 through September 2026. If your bag bears names like “Merry Maids,” “Morgan Stanley,” “Best Western” or “University of Maryland,” it probably falls into this alert.

What to Do About All That Halloween Candy

The government has also confirmed that these products were shipped to 20 states, such as New York, Florida, Texas and California. If you spot one of these bags in your house and have an allergy to peanuts, milk or soy, the best decision is probably just tossing the candy out. Do not attempt to eat or share these with another person because the lack of labelling means an allergic person can’t possibly know what hidden dangers are lurking on the inside.

But if you’re not sensitive to them, there is no need for alarm, according to the F.D.A. The candy inside the bags is typical M&M’s you’d eat from a grocery store and is not infected with bacteria or chemicals. The only issue is what’s missing from the package. If you are healthy and do not have any allergies, you can consume the candy as usual, but the company is still asking that you take note of the mistake so that you don’t inadvertently share it with someone who could get sick.
