Elon Musk Becomes World’s First Trillionaire After Record SpaceX IPO
Elon Musk has become the world's first trillionaire following SpaceX's record $75 billion initial public offering. According to Forbes and Reuters calculations, Musk's net worth is expected to exceed $1.1 trillion when SpaceX begins trading. Most of his wealth now comes from his stake in SpaceX, which is valued at roughly $866 billion. The milestone further strengthens Musk's position as the world's richest person and highlights strong investor confidence in his companies. Analysts say much of SpaceX's valuation reflects belief in Musk's long-term vision for space, AI and technology innovation.
SpaceX's record IPO has made Elon Musk the world's first trillionaire and reaffirmed his status as the richest human.
On Thursday, SpaceX launched its IPO and raised $75 billion at an extraordinarily high demand level for the rocket, satellite and artificial intelligence company. The offering valued Musk's net worth around $780 billion before it.
SpaceX IPO Places Musk Over $1 Trillion
Based on company filings, calculations show Musk's net worth could top $1.1 trillion once SpaceX shares are shared with the public. Most of his wealth is now due to SpaceX, with the stake valued at approximately $866 billion. Other equity (including Tesla and a few private companies) makes up the rest of his fortune.
That milestone leaves Musk in the dust, far ahead of other billionaires. Forbes reported the second-richest person overall has stagnated at just above $300 billion: Only one name, Oracle founder Larry Ellison, ever breached $400 billion before.
Musk's center stage
Musk began his rise to global fame at Tesla and SpaceX, but he swung for the outer reaches of influence after buying Twitter in 2022 for $44 billion.
In recent years investors have come to regard SpaceX as perhaps the most prized jewel Musk has in his empire. Nonetheless, as it grows its satellite, launch and AI business, the company remains a massive magnet for attention.
SpaceX is stuck in long term ideas even with a valuation so massive that its future value is almost all tied to projects involving technologies many years away from large-scale market adoption.
The Surge of the 'Elon Premium'
Investors often praise Musk's ability to conjure billion-dollar business, and some market observers say that his companies have the benefit of what they call an "Elon premium" in their valuations.
SpaceX's valuation is based on factors that go beyond traditional financial metrics, analysts say, adding that it represents investor belief in Musk's vision for industries long considered to be the stuff of science fiction, any sector important to space travel now and into the future, including satellite life cycle management, AI & robotics technology, beam projection recovery operations, and advanced transportation & communications.
His reach stretched far beyond the businesses to politics and public discourse, making Musk among the most prominent and polarizing figures in global technology.
Supporters have credited him with transforming industries from electric vehicles to commercial spaceflight, while critics have flagged risks of corporate control, political entanglement and power coalescing in a single entrepreneur.
