The parent company of Google, Alphabet Inc., has announced that they plan to increase its capital expenditure beginning in 2026, as they maintain spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure, data centre resources and computing capacity. This announcement matches with the company’s most recent quarterly earnings report, which reveals that demand for its AI-based services is growing in the company’s cloud, advertising and consumer platforms.

Earnings Strength Supports Higher Investment

Alphabet reported Q4 revenue of $113.83 billion and adjusted EPS were above what analysts had predicted, demonstrating continuing strength in their core businesses even with the current difficult economic climate. Management noted that most of their infrastructure expenditures are for the development of new infrastructure in support of AI workloads, such as high-performance servers, networking, and the expansion of their data centre capacity to accommodate the growing amount of usage.

Scale of Planned Capital Expenditure

Alphabet is expected to increase its capital expenditure significantly in 2026, up to a range of $235 billion or more and is expected to spend the majority of this increase on AI-based infrastructure (namely, training and operating the infrastructure required for large models). In the past couple of years, Alphabet has substantially increased its capital investment due to its use of generative AI throughout its search, cloud, and productivity offerings.

As these investments increase, Alphabet will continue to face intense competition from companies like Microsoft and Amazon that have also committed heavily to AI-focused investments.

The planned increase in spending indicates how much more financial resources will be needed as a result of the growing global competition in the AI market. Advanced AI systems use a large amount of computing power, as well as energy and physical infrastructures, which means that making large capital investments is very important in order to maintain a competitive position.

Many of the investments being made by Alphabet show that they have confidence that AI-based products will produce significant long-term revenues (especially in the areas of cloud-based systems and enterprise services). At the same time, the need for additional capital investments is also drawing attention from investors regarding the impact on margins, return on investment, and the time necessary for AI-related investments to achieve sustainable profit levels.

The company has focused its investments on areas that show the greatest growth and revenue potential. Alphabet believes that its incremental increase in investments will occur as investments grow over time (rather than an immediate increase occurring all at once).

The plans that Alphabet has for its growth are consistent with what is happening across the technology industry; many large technology companies have committed up to tens of billions of dollars annually for new AI infrastructures.

Alphabet is expected to provide additional details in new investor briefings and filings with regulatory agencies regarding how it will allocate this capital and how its increased level of spending will impact cash flow, earnings and returns in future quarters due to AI's continuing growth in adoption.
