Mass Protests Shake Nepal’s Government
Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday after protests increased, led by young people, demanding action against corruption in Nepal. The protest, which defied curfew and violent clashes with the police, came a day after 19 people lost their lives in confrontations across the country.
The protest started after the government blocked social media platforms, a decision that angered a lot of young people who are already frustrated with corruption and lack of job opportunities in the country. The ban was lifted following public outrage and police firing teargas and bullets at protesters trying to enter the Parliament building.
Despite the government’s attempt to address the current situation, protesters continued their protests throughout Tuesday. The unrest marks the worst political crisis Nepal has seen in years and has left the country in uncertainty.
Buildings Burn, Airport Shut, and Curfews Ignored
The protests quickly escalated, with many people setting fire to buildings, including government offices and the Prime Minister’s residence. A lot of heavy smoke could be seen rising from the Singha Durbar complex, which houses key Government ministries.
Kathmandu’s main International airport was shut down because of thick smoke caused by fires set by the protesters. Roads were blocked by tires, and they were satellite. Stones were thrown at the Police wearing protective gear. Some politicians’ homes were also attacked, with reports of ministers being airlifted to safety. Although violence increased after the Prime Minister’s resignation, protesters remained on the street.
Why The Youth Took To The Streets
Nepal’s young people have been angry for years over corruption and the lack of jobs available in the country. Many of them have been forced to work abroad in countries like the Middle East, South Korea, and Malaysia, sending money back home to support their families.
Organisers of the protest describe it as a “Generation Z demonstration”, driven by frustration with the leaders who live in luxury while ordinary people struggle. Protesters also shared images and social media showing the wealth of politicians and their families.
In the resignation letter, the Prime Minister said he stepped down to help find a political solution and restore peace in Nepal. President Ramchandra Paudel has started the process to appoint a new Prime Minister and is holding talks with protest leaders.
