Synopsis

The US president is moving to allow 300,000 metric tons of additional ground beef imports at lower tariffs for 90 days, potentially benefiting Australian producers as Washington seeks cheaper beef for consumers ahead of November’s election.

Australian beef producers are on the other end of a new import plan from the United States, as President Trump indicated he will permit as much as 300,000 metric tonnes of more ground beef to enter the country in the next 90 days at reduced tariff rates.

The imported beef will be sold 25% cheaper than the current market price, and the plan is to reduce high expenses for Americans. The administration has stated that an executive order that formalizes the policy will be issued in two weeks.

The announcement comes when supplies of US beef are tight. The USDA projects imports of 6.059 billion pounds of beef for 2026, but domestic beef numbers are still close to their historical lows.

Chapter one

Australia Remains a Major Supplier

There is already a significant market for Australian beef in the United States. Australia exported approximately 213.7 million pounds of beef to the US in January and February 2026, ranking behind Brazil and in front of Canada, Mexico and New Zealand in terms of trade levels, according to USDA data.

Meanwhile, US beef imports have remained on the rise, despite low domestic supplies. USDA data indicates that in March alone, the U.S. imported approximately 599 million pounds of beef, which is 19% higher than in March 2025.

The U.S. development comes at a time when Australian beef production is strong. In the March quarter, the meat industry produced 730,077 tonnes of beef, 8% higher than the same period last year, and the highest first quarter since 2011.

The beef industry achieved its highest production on record for the March quarter, with 730,077 tonnes produced, up 8% on the previous year.

Export Volumes Continue to Rise

With strong export activity throughout 2026, Australian beef farmers are also getting back in the US tariff announcement. In the first four months, Australia exported 506,138 tonnes of beef, a 16% increase from the previous year, MLA said.

Australian beef exports are projected to be 2.3 million tonnes of cattle this year and MLA's Cattle Industry Projections 2026 sees exports continuing to be at a record level for Australian exports, according to the USDA.

Some of the principal suppliers are Brazil, Australia, Canada, Mexico and New Zealand. The extra 300 000 tonne allocation has not yet been split between export countries, and the impact on Australian beef farmers will depend on the US government's policy.
