Venezuela has deployed warships, drones, and patrol aircraft along its Caribbean coast and Colombian border. Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López announced that the nation is conducting extensive naval patrols in the Gulf of Venezuela and Lake Maracaibo. Some 15,000 personnel are engaged, together with drones, helicopters, and intelligence equipment.

The deployment is Venezuela’s reaction to the United States deploying a naval squadron off its coast. President Nicolás Maduro described the US move as a threat and blamed Washington for attempting to impose regime change.

US Naval Force Arrives

The US has deployed at least eight warships to the Caribbean, among them guided-missile destroyers USS Gravely, USS Jason Dunham, and USS Sampson. Some 4,000 Marines are on board an amphibious ready group. More ships, such as a nuclear submarine and a guided-missile cruiser, will arrive soon.

The US claims the operation is against drug trafficking, and that it’s targeting the so-called “Cartel de los Soles,” which it blames on Maduro. The White House recently upped the reward for Maduro to $50 million, as a major drug trafficker.

Growing Tensions in the Region

Foreign Minister Yván Gil of Venezuela requested the United Nations to halt the US military deployment. He stated that the deployment of a nuclear submarine contravenes a Latin American treaty that prohibits nuclear weapons. Maduro also deployed the Bolivarian National Militia and increased operations along the border with Colombia. Analysts state that the US deployment could be for exerting pressure on Venezuela in addition to counter-narcotics objectives.
