Johannes, a very powerful story has caused heavy snowfall in Sweden, Finland and Norway. The storm covered a huge area with its strong winds and heavy snow, making travel very difficult. The storm also took the lives of three people in Sweden due to extreme cold conditions.
The meteorological department of Sweden issued alerts regarding the extremely strong winds forecasted in the northern region of the country, as Storm Johannes made its arrival there. The major threat of Storm Johannes emerged from the fact that large trees were going down under the powerful winds of the storm. The destruction of trees led directly to the unfortunate loss of lives reported from different places in Sweden.
Not only did this strong storm cause issues on land, but it also made it impossible for aeroplanes and boats to move. Authoritative figures had no choice but to make decisions about halting all travel other than essential travel until the worst part of the weather had passed. Such a move was important for protecting all citizens from the dangerous combination of bad visibility and strong wind speed entering the land.
Electricity Turns Off Everywhere
The strong winds caused the wires that transmit power to dwellings to break. Just in Sweden, over 40,000 dwellings lost their light due to the storms. It was not only in Sweden that there were power losses due to storms. In Norway, thousands of dwellings in the north and central parts of the country lacked light due to the storms. Fire departments received over 200 Calls due to Weather Conditions.
Finland saw the highest number of homes without electricity, with over 60,000 homes being without power on Sunday morning due to the storm. The extent of the destruction and the time it would take for power line repairs were communicated to all by the Finnish public TV station.
Strong and violent wind gusts led to a dangerously close situation for a plane at an airport in Northern Finland. The 150-passenger plane was hit by the hard winds, pushed off the landing strip, and thrown into the heavy snow. As a few planes that were parked at the airport also got hit by the strong wind, one of them was moved sideways. This helped to understand how strong the wind was at the ground level.
Moving around became nearly impossible due to the volcano. It became difficult for people to make travel plans because Storm Johannes struck the region. A high number of train routes were abandoned throughout Sweden owing to either unsafe conditions or debris left along routes. Travel restrictions were severe to the point that all train travel was prohibited throughout the period when there was a storm alert.
Boat services that linked the various nations in the north also came to a standstill as a measure to ensure that no one was harmed. It became hazardous for boats to navigate on the waters due to the rough seas and strong winds that were blowing on that day. It not only brought an end to the journeys of people but also the necessary items that normally move from the towns and islands along the coasts.
A very serious situation also developed at the airport because of extreme cold conditions in the north part of Finland. The wind was extremely strong to the point that the plane which landed safely on the runway was completely pushed off the runway into snow. Moreover, the wind got hold of a small aircraft that was standing on the runway.
