NATO's highest-ranking official, Mark Rutte, made a bombshell threat Monday: Russia may be poised to attack Western nations in as little as five years. Addressing an audience in London, he emphasized that NATO allies should spend 5% of their entire national budget on military equipment to prevent Putin from launching another war.
Currently, most nations spend far less than that on the military. Rutte would have them allocate 3.5% to normal army spending and another 1.5% to cyber defense and constructing military installations. That would be a huge increase from where nations currently spend.
Russia Building Huge Army Even After Ukraine War
The head of NATO explained that the threat will not disappear even when the war in Ukraine ends. He believes Russia will maintain a massive army of more than 600,000 troops and continue spending buckets of cash on arms, roughly 6.5% of all that their nation produces.
Western military analysts are convinced that Putin desires to have his battle-hardened soldiers prepared to threaten NATO members such as Poland and the Baltic nations. They are convinced Russia might be powerful enough to attack them within less than five years.
Need Five Times More Air Defense Systems
Rutte outlined precisely what NATO must do to counter Russia's military buildup. He indicated the alliance must have five times as many air defense systems, thousands more tanks, and millions more artillery rounds. It is to stockpile enough weapons to repel any Russian attack.
"We observe in Ukraine how Russia rains terror down upon us, so we will make the protection of our skies stronger," Rutte said. He means all the drones and missiles Russia rains down on Ukrainian cities daily.
Russia dubs NATO's proposed plan aggressive
Moscow did not like Rutte's address. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said NATO is proving itself to be "an instrument of aggression and confrontation." Russia consistently maintains that NATO is the aggressor, not it.
But leaders from NATO cite Russia's attack on Ukraine as evidence that Putin cannot be left in peace with his neighbors.
Trump Wants Higher Defense Spending Too
The call for 5% defense spending aligns with what President Trump has been trumpeting. He's been telling European nations they must contribute more to their own defense rather than have America do it for them.
Rutte met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on his visit to London. Britain is likely to commit to the spending rise when NATO leaders gather later this month in the Netherlands. Other nations are negotiating how long it will take them to reach the 5% target - some need until 2035.
