BP Chairman since 2019 Helge Lund seems to be at the end of his time at British Petroleum (BP). BP announced that it will likely replace him by 2026 as the search for his successor begins.

Lund said on the matter “With our strategy now fundamentally reset, BP is focused on executing it quickly, enhancing performance, and increasing shareholder value,”.He added, “This feels like the right moment to begin the process of finding my successor and ensuring a smooth and seamless transition.”

Strategy Shift and Mounting Pressure

BP shares were down 2.2% on Friday morning, as the London-listed company continues to trail behind its industry competitors in recent years.

In February, BP revealed plans to increase its annual oil and gas investment to $10 billion through 2027 while cutting back on renewable energy spending as part of its new strategic direction.

BP CEO Murray Auchincloss, who officially took over in January last year, is facing mounting pressure to convince investors that the company is on the right path to boost its financial performance.

“Elliott is continuing to push BP for a clearer and more decisive shift away from the renewable-focused strategy introduced by former CEO Bernard Looney,” Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, told CNBC in an email on Friday.

While analysts have generally supported BP’s renewed emphasis on hydrocarbons, the struggling energy giant still faces considerable pressure from activist investors. For the new BP Chairman to address some of these issues will be a major undertaking.
