At Least 21 Killed In Horrific Spain Train Crash

Two fast-moving trains collided late on Sunday, January 18th, 2026, near the town of Adamuz in Córdoba province. The rail crash took place on a recently overhauled section of track, which makes the reasons for the disaster a vexing mystery for investigators.
The issue started when a private train called “Iryo,” travelling from Málaga to Madrid with more than 300 passengers, was inexplicably derailed. As it did so, the back of the train pivoted out onto an adjacent track, straight into the path of an oncoming “Renfe” train travelling from Madrid to Huelva. Survivors said the impact felt like it did from a massive earthquake causing multiple fatalities.
A Scene of Chaos
The force of the impact sent the front carriages of the second train off the rails and down a steep embankment. Survivors of the initial crash described being plunged into complete darkness and terror. Scores of people needed to use emergency hammers on the train’s windows to break through glass and get away from the mangled steel. Local people from the nearby town of Adamuz flocked to the scene with blankets and food and assisted emergency workers as temperatures plunged through the night.
Rescue crews, including special military teams, cut through the night to try to extract passengers from twisted wreckage. Firefighters said the work was extremely hard because the metal from the train’s seats and walls had melted together, making it difficult to reach victims still inside. Unfortunately, officials warn that the death toll may increase as they search through the most devastated sections of the trains.
Why Did It Happen?
The Spanish Transport Minister said the crash was “truly unusual” because it occurred on a flat, straight portion of the rail. This section of rail had been recently repaired and updated in May, and the trains were almost new. There were no sharp turns, and there was nothing obvious that would have thrown the train off the tracks, so investigators are focusing on whether something malfunctioned unexpectedly with the computer-operated controls or mechanical equipment.
For business executives and other travellers, this accident raises some of the big questions about safety: High-speed rail is generally a very safe way to move. All trains between Madrid and the southern region of Andalusia have been halted as the tracks are cleared and inspected for any safety concerns. An official inquiry has begun and it may take weeks to establish exactly why two of the most advanced trains in Europe went so tragically wrong.
