India-US News: Tensions Rise As Trump Warns of Tariff Hike

In the latest news, the former US president, Donald Trump, has warned India that he might raise tariffs sharply because of continued trade with Russia. Trump wrote on his platform that India is buying massive amounts of Russian oil and making profits by selling some of it in the open market.

He criticised India for not caring about the war in Ukraine, saying, “ They don’t care how many people are being killed by the Russian war machine.” This message came just days after he announced 25% on Indian goods and warned more penalties might follow.

India Responds by Calling Trump’s Warning Unfair

The Indian government did not stay silent in this situation. The foreign ministry called Trump’s threat unjustified and unreasonable. The ministry explained that India began buying more Russian oil because Europe had taken most of the supply during the early days of the Ukraine war.

India also pointed out that the US traded $3.5 billion worth of goods with Russia last year, despite its sanctions. A Spokesperson from the ministry said, “India will take all steps to protect its national interest and economic security.”

Experts say India is not doing anything secret or wrong. A former trade official said that Indian oil refineries make their own decisions based on price and supply, not based on government orders.

Trump’s Changing Stand on Russia and India

Last week, Trump called India a friend but also said that Indian tariffs on products are too high. He warned of possible penalties, especially over India’s trade with Russia. Interestingly, Trump’s tone on Russia has also shifted. Though we had warmer ties with Putin earlier this year, he is now calling the Russian army the “Russian War machine” and threatening Moscow with higher tariffs if peace talks don't open soon.
