Rising Tensions Over India Funding Russia

In the latest news, Stephen Miller, a senior aide to the US president Donald Trump, has strongly criticised India for buying oil from Russia. In a TV interview, he said that these purchases are financing Russia’s war in Ukraine, and India is buying almost as much Russian oil as China. He called this astonishing and said it needs to stop.

This new statement adds more stress to the relationship between India and the Trump administration. Miller’s comment comes days after new US tariffs on India started on August 1. These words now made the debate about India funding Russia a major topic.

US May Take Serious Actions In India-Russia Oil Trading

This latest news also shows that the United States may take more action if India continues buying Russian oil. Trump has already put a 25% tariff on Indian goods and is now talking about adding 100% more on some imports. The goal is to push countries away from Russia unless Russia agrees to peace and stops the war.

At the same time, Trump has said he values his personal relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The US Secretary of State said that India is an important partner but that the Russian oil trade is “a point of irritation.”

India Responds to US Criticism

In answer to these statements, Indian officials said they will not stop buying oil from Russia. They explain that India makes these decisions based on its own needs and not pressure from any other country. This means India will buy oil from Russia.

Before the war in Ukraine, Russian oil was a small part of India’s imports. Now it makes up to 35 to 40% of all the oil in India. Just June 2025, India imported over 2 million barrels of Russian oil every day. This shows that India and Trump relations could get more tense as buying continues.

Experts say that if India has to buy oil from other countries instead of Russia, it could cost India an extra $9-11 billion each year. This is because oil is cheaper. At the same time oil oil-producing countries are planning to increase production in September. This could change prices in the future, but for now, issues of India funding Russia remain a major subject.
