Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued an urgent call for international action after one of Russia’s largest attacks on Kyiv since the conflict started. The overnight attack hit 7 of the 10 districts in the capital, eliciting harsh criticism of the international response.
Record-Breaking Assaults Target Ukrainian Capital
Russia launched a historic wave of 315 drones and seven missiles over Ukrainian skies in the first hours of Tuesday. The attack was a total of five hours and targeted mostly Kyiv, along with some southeastern Odesa and other areas.
Three individuals had to give up their lives in this assault and left extensive devastation in the capital. Seven missiles and 213 attack drones were intercepted by Ukrainian air defence systems, and 64 other drones went dark from radar or were countered by electronic warfare systems.
Among the affected victims was extensive damage to St. Sophia Cathedral, an 11th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ukrainian cultural minister Mykola Tochytski was very outraged at the attack and described the attack on the church as “the soul of all Ukraine.”
International Response Falls Short, Zelenskyy Says
Talking through his Telegram channel, Zelenkskyy expressed outrage at the global community’s reaction to intensifying Russian attacks. He directly condemned the United States of America and other countries around the world for inaction against Moscow’s ongoing assaults.
“Russian missile and Shahed strikes are louder than what the United States and others around the globe are doing are doing to push Russia toward peace,” said Zelenkskyy. He reiterated that actual steps, not silence, were needed from America and Europe to push Russia toward the negotiating table.
The Ukrainian President mentioned that a total of 250 drones used in the attack were Iranian Shaheds, and two missiles were North Korean, pointing out the global nature of the military assistance from Russia.
Civilian Infrastructure Under Fire
The shelling specifically hit the civilian places, with normal residential buildings and urban facilities taking most of the hits. In the city of Odesa, a maternity hospital was among the targeted buildings. It has 9 wounded people and 2 dead, one of whom was a 59-year-old man.
Even with the intensification, Zelenkskyy revealed that prisoner exchanges with Russia were ongoing after recent peace negotiations. Ukrainian fighters were being released from Russian custody.
The European Union reacted to this incident by revealing fresh sanctions on Russia, including plans to lower the cap price of Russian oil from $60 to $45 per barrel. Ukraine’s leadership insists that more tougher actions are required to prevent more attacks on civilians.
