Most believe the 61-year-old politician's triumph over incumbent party candidate Kim Moon-soo is conclusive evidence that policies of the past administration were unpopular.
From Martial Law to a New Life in Politics
The election took place amidst political turmoil that had never been seen before. It began when the former President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law last year. That despicable decision resulted in gigantic demonstrations on the streets and ultimately in Yoon's impeachment and removal from office. The former president remains under indictment for abusing his office.
Lee's victory is a massive departure from the anticipated. Three years ago, he lost the presidency to Yoon by a very narrow margin. Ever since then, he has gone through a series of political controversies, including corruption investigations and intra-party brawls that threatened his career.
Voters Reject Ruling Party's Authority
Park Sung-min, who is a political analyst at Min Consulting, indicates that the voters might not have been in the complete support of Lee's exact plans. Rather, they were responding to what many perceived as a severe breach of democratic norms. Park explained to reporters, "The election became a way to show anger."
Once Yoon departed, the People Power Party government was in complete disarray. Internal bickering pushed their candidate of choice down to May, and two caretaker presidents were also in line for impeachment. This chaos was clearly great news for Lee's Democratic Party candidacy.
Problems Coming Up for the New President
Lee has a lot of issues to address despite winning the election. He must go to court to respond to alleged infractions of election law, but sitting presidents are generally not punished unless they are indicted for treason or insurrection.
Lee must somehow reconcile the vast political chasms that have fissured South Korean society. Yoon enjoys a solid foundation of support, particularly among young men and the elderly, who believe martial law was appropriate.
International Pressures Are Rising
Foreign policy issues could be more pressing. Lee has to contend with the Trump administration while still negotiating significant trade agreements. South Korea's economy is already struggling anyway because demand is low, so there's a need to obtain good terms from the US.
During his election victory speech, the new president spoke of how huge these responsibilities were and assured the people that he would not disappoint them in these critical moments.
